'Her most accomplished effort yet'
(Mirror )'Wener's thoughtful literary style and page-turning pace are a combo that should won her plenty of fans'
(Glamour )'Edith's house interested us from the beginning'
Mysterious and inviting, Jessie and Margaret are drawn to their reclusive neighbour's house. It offers an escape from the dreary summer of 1977 and their fragile family life, into a world they can only dream about. When the house suddenly burns down at the same time as their mother moves out to live with her new boyfriend, and their father develops an unhealthy crush on a woman in their street, life seems bleak for the girls.

A book to cheer up any journey,
This review is from: Worldwide Adventures in Love (Paperback)
This is a delightful book which I picked up in a train station and couldn't put down until the end of the journey. Louise Wener explores childhood in 1977, reminding us of the events and flavours of that time.
Two sisters have to cope with the pressures of teenage life, the split-up of their parents' marriage and fitting in at school. It all sounds a bit soap-opera but Wener manages to construct the narrative with enough warmth to allow us to see the world through the eyes of the narrator and to laugh at the antics of the adult characters.

Not a classic but worthy of a quick read,

This is the first book that I've read from Louise Wener and I have to say I was underwhelmed by the whole thing. Nothing really happens and whatever does occur is quite easy to predict and the ending is quite limp to be honest. That's not to say it's a bad book but probably more suited to teenagers (not being patronising). It's just an easy to read book that you'll probably not want to keep.

Delightful,

This review is from: Worldwide Adventures in Love (Paperback)
In this delightful novel we hear the stories of two very different families in two very different eras.
It's 1977 - the era of cheesecloth, 'Swap Shop' and frozen chicken Kiev's. Jessie tells us all about her lower middle-class family which is falling apart. Her Mum has decided to 'find' herself and in doing so throws the whole world out of kilter for Jessie, her sister Margaret and their dad. They muddle along, lurching from one crisis to the next, making good, bad and disastrous choices, doing the best they can. It's the 1930s and beautiful, fearless explorer Edith writes to her sister telling of her adventures in Greenland, Africa - and in love. She too has choices to make but in her upper class milieu there are 'standards' and 'taboos' which govern those all-important choices. Jessie's family story impinges on Edith's and we realise that everyone, no matter what their position is in life or history, has to make seemingly impossible decisions. And these cannot be made without consideration for those who are closest to us - but who sometimes seem determined to scupper us - our families. This all sounds a bit grim but Louise Wener has the knack of telling an intricate tale with humour (lots of it!), insight and a wonderfully light touch - making it totally accessible and all the more poignant. I can't recommend this novel highly enough.
