Meet some of the world’s hardest good guys…

Product Description

Welcome to the World’s Toughest Cops. This is a no holds barred look at a the people who risk their lives to serve and protect, in the front line of a war against drugs, gangs, gun crime, violence and smuggling.

Vinnie takes the reader into the jungles of Colombia – where Sub-Lieutenant John Orejuela of the Special Ops Commando Unit leads a secret mission to take out a terrorist camp – and goes on patrol in the Californian suburb of Compton, following the cops caught up in a deadly cat-and-mouse game with the gangs of South Central LA. He recounts the struggles of officer Andre Steyn of the Flying Squad against car-jackings and armed robberies in the desperate streets of Durban, South Africa and joins the few good men trying to police the back-alleys and no-go zones of New Orleans, where the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has seen a tidal wave of violent crime flood the city.
Vinnie forged a reputation as a tough guy on the football pitch, and in America he now has a successful career in the cut-throat film business. But even he is in awe of the men and women who are trying to police the most dangerous areas on the planet. If on the pitch he followed Orwell's assertion that 'football is war minus the shooting', here he's discovering what life is like for those dealing with a real war – with real shooting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gives Ross Kemp a run for his money 12 Feb 2010
After the runaway success of Ross Kemp's 'Gangs' series, it seems former football hard man and now Hollywood star Vinnie Jones fancied getting in on the book-writing act... and, perhaps surprisingly, the result is a fast-paced, well-written, punchy and exciting book. Far better written, in fact, than any of the Ross Kemp offerings.

Vinnie takes the reader on patrol with 10 forces worldwide, embedding himself with the cops and experiencing their day-to-day lives on patrol. And like he says in the intro, it's not some 'celebrity jaunt' - it's real, dangerous and often quite brutal. In El Salvador, for example, he's on the scene minutes after a double murder, in LA he helps bust a gang party, and in New Orleans he jumps out of the car and chases down a suspected gunman on foot!

Vinnie's no stranger to brushes with the law himself, but in this book he shows not only a serious respect for the incredibly dangerous work these cops do every day, but the ability to write about it in an edgy, page-turning, fast-paced style.

I couldn't put it down - and I came away with a newfound respect for not only the cops involved, but for Vinnie's abilities as an author. Would recommend to anyone - and I suspect this will just be the first of many books from him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vinnie meets some real hard men 19 Feb 2010
This is a gritty, adrenaline-fuelled ride with some of the world's real hard men. I was gearing up for a laugh at the football-player's attempt to pass himself off as in the same league as these guys, but you can tell Vinnie Jones is in awe of the people that he met. It's clear that if you go onto the beat in Columbia, South Africa or Kosovo you may not be coming back. Vinnie does a good job of getting these guys to talk to him and getting to understand how they tick - the stories that they tell, coupled with having Vinnie along for raids makes for a hell of a read. Get yourself a copy, but don't read it before bedtime.

I found this book in a local charity shop and as a fan of both Vinnie and the cops worldwide bought it. I was not disappointed. The book focuses on 10 cops from areas of the world you would not want to police.
From Kosovo to Columbia to Las Angeles it follows the work done by individuals to keep the world safe for the majority of us.
I can't imagine the courage and conviction it takes for an individual to keep fighting crime in these conditions but it its great to know they are out there and that tv thinks it worthwhile to honour them.
As I do..
