Amazon.co.uk Review

You really don't expect much from a game with the title World's Scariest Police Chases but against all the odds this is actually really good. The title of the game refers not to some sort of zombie-themed kart game but an ultra-cheesy American equivalent to the UK's own pretty cheddary Police Camera Action.

This may sound like a pretty odd TV programme to make a game out of but cleverly Fox Interactive have turned the whole thing into a clone of Driver 2--except without the clunky, jerky graphics. The bulk of the gameplay involves you chasing bad guys all over a massive city and repeatedly ramming into them until they stop.

If you don't feel the public are put into enough danger by your driving alone you can also pull out a variety of weaponry to persuade the felons to mend their evil ways. Although there are only 20 of them all the missions are cleverly designed and there're even a few that don't involve massive amounts of auto destruction--although thankfully most do. So ignore the name and enjoy what's probably going to be one of the PS One's last great driving games. --David Jenkins

Product Description

Did you play cops-n-robbers as a child? Based on Fox Broadcasting's anthology TV series of high-speed pursuit highlights, World's Scariest Police Chases puts you in the driver's seat of a powerful police cruiser in 20 crime-busting missions. You'll be on the lookout for an array of illegal activity, including drunk drivers, robberies in progress and deadly shootouts. Once engaged, you'll pursue suspects through a dynamic city by taking shortcuts and using aggressive tactics as necessary to apprehend them. Two-player mode lets you roll with a partner; one handles the car while the other fires shots at fleeing vehicles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shoots ahead of the Driver series! 22 Nov 2001
If you like tearing through huge, open streets chasing criminals, destroying innoccent vehicles and civillian property to knock over all from the seat of an American cop car, then this is your type of game! With 20 heart-racing missions and blazing weapons at your arsenal, World's Scariest Police Chases rocks! There are also bonus items to unlock; from a Halloween theme, which changes the environment into ghosts and skeletons, to the awesome Low Gravity mode, which, after performing a jump by racing up or down a hill, allows you to glide through the air for 100 times the distance! 2-Player mode gives you an even bigger slice of the action, where you take control of the driving whilst your mate backs you up with the shooting! This allows you to do everything you can on single-player, but with double the action!
Also available is Free Patrol mode, where you can do whatever the hell you want! You can unlock different parts of the level, including the Airport, where you see yourself racing through car parks and causing total chaos from the view of a security camera, and the Church, which is an absolute dream if you have Low Gravity mode!
An absolute classic! Buy it or miss out on one of the best games ever!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great fun, but not enough variety. 27 July 2001
By A Customer
The name screams at you as you stare at that brilliant packaging. World's Scariest Police Chases may sound great, but it's not as exciting as the name and size that it's written in suggests. Based on a US version of Police Camera Action, this game puts you in the drivers seat of a large array of vhicles, from police car to a school bus, each of them harder to handle than each other. The goal is to track down a car and shoot at it using a wide selection of weapons including machine guns and rocket launchers until it eventually stops while it trys to get away. Sound like fun? Well it is, for a few hours. After a while, you'll have got bored of the missions, done the shallow two player mode and really realise what this game is: The same thing over and over again. There really is nothing else to do than chase a car and shoot it. You can't get out of the car and you cannot interact with the scenery except for knocking over some cones and the only thing that keeps the game going is the fact that the missions get harder and harder, but it's still the same objective. The developers try to make it interesting by making you go back for an item that drops out of the car or in the first few missions, you're at a police academy so you've got to drive around some cones for a little bit but this doesn't add anything. Ultimately, it's a boring affair, with car chases no where near as exciting as they could've been and not enough to do to keep it going. A good game to rent out for a night though.

5.0 out of 5 stars World's Scariest Police Chases 2 Jan 2005

World's Scariest Police Chases is a excellent game, sure the graphics let it down a bit but they're still good for a PS1 game. The gameplay is wicked! There are loads of exciting missions and hilarious extras like "Water Theme" when your siren is a starfish! And if you do get bored with the missions there is a "Free Patrol" mode when you can patrol the city of Ashland apprehending criminals. Excellent game. You should by it!

4.0 out of 5 stars a simple idea, not a simple game!!! 17 Dec 2002
This game does give a lot of driving thrills in the free patrol mode where you are a normal cop on the beat, but I do feel somewhat restricted in the main missions. This is because you feel as if you are obeying the game's every demand. This can get a bit annoying at first but as you play the game more and more you will begin to see the benefits of it. You can drive a wide variety of different vehicles with different attributes, and there is also the ability of firing a small arsenal of guns including a shotgun, a rocket launcher and a machine gun.
The two player mode of this game is very good, however. It lets one player drive the vehicle for catching criminals and the other player shoot them (play with someone forgiving!).
Overall a good game for the player who likes a challenge with a twist, but not for the player who prefers a more GTA style with the option to follow orders OR do what you want. I enjoyed it a lot and it is a thoroughly enjoyable game. Worth buying definatly.

5.0 out of 5 stars WSPC 12 Feb 2007
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Played this game for a few years, when you get bored apprehending criminals you can always try and set a new record for most amount of damage done to the city (traffic cones make a reassuring thunk when you hit them). ;)

One minor problem: Be careful in low gravity mode. Occasionally I fly too high over hills and the car gets imbedded in the front of buildings, effectively ending your game.

4.0 out of 5 stars World's Scariest Police Chases 8 Feb 2004

I think that world's scariest police chases is a very good game but the graphics could be better. You have a good range of cars from Police cars to Army Tanks. You can do 1 of 20 missions or just have a Free Patrol where you just drive round catching drug dealers car theives and much more. You can also train yourself up on pursuit courses!! I give it a 4/5.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Game Of Cops & Robbers! 25 Jan 2004
I got 'World's Scariest Police Chases' for my birthday the year that it came out and i was absolutely over the moon with it. You get to speed your way through 20 exciting levels behind the wheel of 13 different cars and a whole list of fire-arms at your dissposal.
The ultimate goal is to basically catch the bad guys in each case and to help you on your way there are even a few training missions, just to make sure that you are safe behind the wheel.
For saying it's only on PS1, the graphics are pretty good overall, however i think that this game should be remade for PS2 because it has real potential in both good graphics and supurb gameplay.
This is the ultimate cops and robbers game and if you fancy a bit of fast-paced action, plenty of chases and a few guns, then would say that this is the game for you. Also, if you a fan of 'Driver' then this would also be a good game to get. Have fun!
