Product Description

Review
"A delightful, informative, and accurate book about the probable proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. [This book is] highly recommended even to readers who think they hate math."--Martin Gardner
"Within a few minutes of the conclusion of his [Dr. Wiles's] final lecture, computer mail messages were winging around the world as mathematicians alerted each other to the startling and wholly unexpected result."--the "New York Times"

Product Description
The person with the highest IQ in the world explains Dr. Wiles's discovery of the solution for the greatest mathematical riddle in the world, Fermat's Last Theorem, and describes the great thinkers who have attempted to solve it. Original.

3.0 out of 5 stars Confusing reviews, 19 Jun 2000
By A Customer
I have not actually read this book but am confused by the reviews. Wiles first announced his proof of FLT in June 1993. This was proved to be flawed and he did not succeed in producing his final proof for another year. As this book was written in 1993 then the proof to which it refers is known to be flawed. Therefore I do not understand the abuse levelled at this author in daring to suggest that it was flawed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother, 12 April 1999
By A Customer
A book written in 3 weeks (the author readily admits this in the Acknowledgments Section) attempts to explain a proof that was seven years in the making and to provide historical perspective on the mathematics underlying this proof -- don't waste your time or your money.

The book is just wrong. Read the proof for yourself, Annals of Mathematics 141, 3 (1995) and decide for yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marilyn was right, if only for "the wrong reasons".

2.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended for gaining an understanding of the proof.
The book talks more about the pitfalls inherent in mathematical proofs than about Wiles' proof of FLT. Reader agrees with the points made in the book.
