Product Description

Product Description

At the end of The Wraiths of Elfael, Mair Rees leaped into the chasm between worlds to rescue the stolen spirit of her best friend Heulwen. Now she finds herself in an alternate version of medieval Wales, one where magic is possible, with no idea where her friend might be—right at the start of the Norman invasions. Her quest will take her high into the mountains, deep underground, and to the shadowy Otherworld of Annwn itself—and she will not return unchanged.

While Heulwen’s body sleeps in our world, her spirit awakes in a mountain fortress, and in a new body—and finds she has stepped into the world of myths and legends, and is at the centre of a ruthless power struggle for the right to rule Wales.

Morwen is the daughter of the lord of Llandderwen. When her father is mortally injured in battle she must take responsibility for her people, and find a way to drive away the Norman invaders. She turns first to the Old Magic, and then to the services of Deryn, the witch woman. The choices she makes will have drastic consequences for Mair and Heulwen—and for herself.

And running through it all is the Lady of the Tylwyth Teg, hunted through this strange new world and in constant danger of her life.

Steeped in the myths and history of Wales, The World’s Midnight is the gripping story of three young women and the challenges they face—from the relentless pursuit of a demon of the Otherworld to attack from scorpion-like creatures that feed on human flesh. At its heart lies the question: how far are you willing to go for the sake of the ones you love?

And what—or who—are you willing to sacrifice?

More About the Author

Gordon Reid lives and writes in Caithness in the far north of Scotland. A New Zealander by birth and an archivist by trade, he has worked all over England, Wales and Scotland before finally running out of mainland and settling not far from John O' Groats.

His favourite creative space is the point where history, myth and imagination meet, the landscape where the familiar becomes strange and dark things seem to move in the shadows of the mind's eye. (Imagine a cross between the dark fantasy of Alan Garner, the poetry of Ted Hughes and the surreal mystery of Twin Peaks and you have an idea of the kind of territory Gordon Reid has claimed as his own.)

Apart from creative writing, Gordon's main passions are listening to music and knitting traditional fisherman's jumpers, the famous ganseys or guernseys. Together with his wife Margaret who--exasperated with his constant fidgeting--taught him to knit, he runs the celebrated knitting blog

A good follow up to the first of the trilogy and rather faster paced. Now waiting for the third volume, please. Good, original writing and hard to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fairy tale/ Sword and sorcery. 17 April 2013
By Helen
Format:Kindle Edition
The second in a series, this book is a complete story and can be read independantly. The characters are beautifully drawn. They make mistakes, act selfishly, betray each other and redeem themselves, utterly human. I have not read this author before, but I will in future.
