Product Description

A superlative wine for every day of the year - is that too much to ask? As the French say, pas du tout. With "The World's Greatest Wines", two of the wine world's most respected authorities, Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve, present a calendar's worth of wines that, in their expert judgement, every wine lover would want to experience. Longtime editors of France's top wine guide, "La Revue due Vin de France", Bettane and Desseauve have an unsurpassed knowledge of their home nation's wines. But here they broaden their sights, embracing an array of fine wines, red and white, sparkling and still, dry and sweet - from all over the globe. Every major kind of wine and wine growing region is represented on the author's meticulously chosen list - from the cabernets of California, to the malbecs of Argentina, to the sauvignon blancs of New Zealand, to the rieslings of Germany's Mosel region. Much more than just a catalog of producers of labels, the book contains a detailed profile of each of the wine estates selected, notes on the recent vintages the authors prefer, and a series of spectacular images of some of the world's more renowned vineyards and wineries. Countries featured in "The World's Greatest Wines" are: Europe - France, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Hungary; Americas - North America, Chile, Argentina; Africa - South Africa; Pacific - Australia, New Zealand, Japan; Bouchard Finlayson; Bredell Wines; Klein Constantia; Ken Forrester Vineyards; Morgenhof; Morgenster; Rupert & Rothschild; Rustenberg; Thelema Mountain Vineyards; and Vergelegen.

2.0 out of 5 stars A guide for namedroppers - I'm very dissapointed, 20 Mar 2007
This review is from: The World's Greatest Wines (Hardcover)
Very, very conservative. Nothing new here, only the top 10 % of the blue chip wineries, which most people already know. I rate this book two stars because of the very nice photos (some are breathtaking) - the information only merits one star.

2.0 out of 5 stars If you know who Bettane is, you do not want this book, 8 Mar 2007
By Robert Rudolph "Rob" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The World's Greatest Wines (Hardcover)
This first significant work by Michel Bettane to appear in any language in years is just a silly coffee-table book. The world's most thoughtful and thorough wine writer has apparently sold his name to a book of photographs with no serious content. Some of the featured wineries are oddly chosen and would seem to have been included for commercial reasons. Anyone who already owns a few wine books does not need this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Potential, 9 May 2007
By Peter Windred - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The World's Greatest Wines (Hardcover)
I thought the book had very interesting insights into the story of the "world's greatest wines" but stopped short of being a comprehensive guide. It succeeds however as a broad outline and is useful none-the-less.
