Format:Audio CD
It can't be a bad thing to have positive aspirations in times as dark as
these and Adam Bainbridge (recording as Kindness) would appear to have
them aplenty in his debut release 'World, You Need A Change Of Mind'.
The album glows with love and good fellow-feeling. Even when tackling a
number as trite as Anita Dobson's 'Anyone Can Fall In Love' (one of two
covers in the set) he manages to transcend banality and (with an exquisite
grasp of harmony) transform a car crash of a song and recalibrate it as a
soft-and fluffy hymn to hippie heaven! It's not all kaftan-clad stuff however;
his take on seventies' funk on the brief but delicious 'Get Up' isn't afraid
to let its hair down (and Mr Bainbridge is clearly folically-blessed in this
department!) and party. Final track 'Doigsong', too, with its bouncy slap-bass
and juicy phased guitar accents, sports a shiny pair of disco dancing shoes.
Mr Bainbridge's voice isn't the most expressive instrument on the planet but
he makes the most of his limitations and covers the cracks with consistently
well-conceived vocal harmonies. His arrangement of The Replacement's 1985
composition 'Swingin' Party', with its bubbling synth and clickety-clackety
beats, is awash with the kind of dreamy cadences to drag the sun out of the
darkest cloud and the gentle ebb and flow and soulful chorus of 'House' (top
track by a country mile) delivers one of the loveliest songs I've heard this year.
The project won't take the world by storm but makes it a somewhat better place by stealth.

Funky Synth Pop - took a couple of 'play throughs' to get into and then it really took off. Great album!
