Biography

The origins of the band go back to 1900 when the village of Elworth near
Sandbach formed its own band to feature in the relief of Mafeking in the Boer
War.

After a couple of years the band was wound up, but from that base Edwin
Foden formed the Fodens Motor Work Band.

The band has been a prize winner at the British Open Brass Band Championships over 30 times, winning nine ... Read more in Amazon's The Fodens Band Store

Product Description

CD Description

The music on this recording charts new territory for both Foden s Band and their Composer-in-Residence, Andy Scott. The association began in 2007 when Foden s principal tuba player, Les Neish commissioned Andy to write Salt of the Earth, a concerto for tuba and brass band, with funds from the Worshipful Company of Musicians in recognition of the composer s success in winning the Wind Band and Brass Band section of the British Composer Awards 2006. The success of this initial collaboration, and what could be described as the Sandbach connection (Andy lives within walking distance of Foden s rehearsal space in the historic market town) led to Andy s appointment as the band s first ever Composer-in-Residence. This recording chronicles the first two years of this mutually inspiring partnership and the exciting new music that has resulted. Andy Scott, an original and intuitive composer, has a playing background as a saxophonist that covers a vast array of styles although his time with Foden s is his first foray into the uniquely specialised (or equally diverse!) world of brass banding. The result is a melding of elements as diverse as the formalism of Western classical music, the sparsity of Japanese minimalism, the evocative sounds of rural British folk tunes and the rhythms of jazz, all pulled together by Foden s characteristic warm ensemble sound and dazzling virtuoso playing, taking composer, band and listener into new and richly rewarding areas.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Dimensions in brass band music 14 Sep 2010
Format:Audio CD
This superbly presented album of music by Andy Scott, Foden's composer in residence and celebrated saxophonist and teacher, stretches the band's soloists and takes brass band music firmly into the arena of modern classical music. Most of the pieces were specially composed, others are arrangements of pieces for saxophone ensembles. Settings of poems and spoken inserts in the moving 'Battle of Barossa' are particularly effective, with Scott's inherent musicality achieving melodic and rhythmic effects outside the usual brass band repertoire. A booklet of comprehensive sleeve notes explores the composer's intentions and inspiration, and the CD is a rewarding listen, at a time when a lot of contemporary classical music is difficult for the lay person. Thoroughly recommended.
