Manufacturer's Description
Fans of World of Warcraft, prepare for Blizzard Entertainment's next installment -- World of Warcraft: Wrath of King Lich. In this latest expansion, something is afoot in the cold, harsh northlands. The Lich King Arthas has set in motion events that could lead to the extinction of all life on Azeroth. The necromantic power of the plague and legions of undead armies threaten to sweep across the land. Only the mightiest heroes can oppose the Lich King and end his reign of terror.

Enter the Death Knight
This expansion adds a host of content to the already massive existing game world. Players will achieve soaring levels of power, explore Northrend (the vast icy continent of the Lich King), and battle high-level heroes to determine the ultimate fate of Azeroth. As you face the dangers of the frigid, harsh north, prepare to master the dark necromantic powers of the Death Night -- World of Warcraft's first Hero class. No longer servants of the Lich King, the Death Knights begin their new calling as experienced, formidable adversaries. Each is heavily armed, armoured, and in possession of a deadly arsenal of forbidden magic.

If you have a World of Warcraft account with a character of at least level 55, you will be able to create a new level-55 Death Knight of any race (if on a PvP realm, the Death Knight must be the same faction as your existing character). And upon entering the new world, your Death Knight will begin to quest to level 80, gaining potent new abilities and talents along the way. This expansion allows for only one Death Knight per realm, per account.

New Environments in Northrend Await
Journey through the remote, diverse lands of Northrend and explore Dragonblight, Grizzly Hills, Borean Tundra, and Howling Fjord. Named for bones of perished dragons and majestic shrines to the fallen creatures, Dragonblight is an arctic wasteland surrounded by dense forests.

Not everything is frozen in Northrend. The lush mountains of Grizzly Hills are the ancestral home to the furbolgs, who have grown accustomed to relative peace. Although their tranquility is being challenged by trappers, goblins, and ice trolls, Grizzly Hills remains a vast and dangerous wilderness.

The south-western tip of Northrend is home to the sprawling Borean Tundra. The Horde has established a dominant presence in this icy portion of the continent and has formed a bond with the tuskarr, a walrus-like race of nomadic fisherman. Magical energy is afoot in the region, and it has caused increased tension.

High above the Great Sea at the south-eastern tip of Northrend lies the Howling Fjord. Ancient mythology holds that a race of half-giant warriors, the vrykul, once inhabited the land, founding a prosperous civilization. They mysteriously vanished, leaving deserted villages and abandoned temples. In present times, the Alliance and the Horde have come to Howling Fjord to confront the Lich King. Strangely, this has prompted the return of the vrykul, who are attacking the Alliance and Horde settlements. Howling Fjord presents a difficult challenge on two fronts: withstanding the vrykul's onslaught and battling the evil Lich King.

A Multitude of Monsters
Strange and terrifying creatures inhabit the frozen continent of Northrend, such as Nerubian Viziniers, Plague Eruptors, Shoveltusks and Flesh Giants, to name just a few. Half-spider, half-humanoid, the viziniers utilize sorcery and high intelligence to emerge as the rulers of Nerubians' underground kingdom. The Plague Eruptors are walking corpses created by the Lich King's evil experiments to spread horror and chaos across the living world.

Massive curved antlers make it easy to identify the Shoveltusks. These grumpy beasts are very dangerous, territorial, and best left alone. The Flesh Giants are nothing short of nightmarish abominations. Cobbled together from the pieces of giant body parts, the Flesh Giants employ tremendous strength to carry out the Lich King's wishes.

The World of Warcraft: Wrath of King Lich expansion pack allows you to engage in epic siege warfare. The pack presents the first Hero class and allows you to transform your Death Knight's look with character customisation that even includes hairstyles and dances. You'll enjoy exploring the Northrend and all its environments and dungeons, filled with some of the deadliest creatures -- and greatest treasures -- on all of Azeroth.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great game spoiled by teh community, 26 Feb 2009
By Robert D (Colchester) - See all my reviews
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
At peak times, 1/3 of the realms are full, 1/3 are medium and the rest are low. This means you either play on a realm with more people and put up with the issues this presents (lag, queues to get in etc) or a less populated one but wait longer for that group or Battleground. I think rather than rejuvenate the game this expansion has made everything super easy for everyone, even the "casuals" to the point that there is no more challenge. Not enough challenge makes it boring.

Death knights were introduced largely to solve the lack of tanks issue, however even though literally everyone who owns this expansion has a death knight, most of them would rather do damage than tank despite it being possible to tank regardless of whether you are blood, unholy or frost.

The achievements system in place feels gimmicky and is largely there to please the XBox live crowd, it has no other meaning apart from bragging rights, you get some rewards for the tougher ones but all you get is a different looking tabard or mount so why bother. Blizzard could have integrated it into a smarter quest log, but that would've been too useful. Far too many players use it as an artificial barrier to getting into a raid or dungeon: if you don't have the necessary achievement they won't take you on a heroic/raid even if you've done it before on another character.

The arena system unbalances PvP yet again and as it progresses in seasons will likely unbalance PvE as it did before. Waiting in a battleground on some realms could take up to an hour, unless you are level 80 I would forget about joining one it isn't worth it. Not many seem to do PvP now as PvE content is so easy and offer much better items.

Blizzard seems to be getting more money hungry, character transfers, changing you characters name, changing your characters sex, all cost far too much. You could almost buy a new game for the amount they charge!

Sadly I think that the next expansion will come out when WoW has passed it's peak (it is looking that way already), Blizzard will churn out regular expansions once a year and no doubt reduce XP to entice new customers (there can't be many left surely!).

The community will make you lose all faith in humanity, most realms are populated by some of the most retarded people on the Internet. It will take you a while to find people who don't use LOL in place of punctuation, use "txt speak" like QQ or vulgar language at every opportunity and that is just the forums. If any of that makes you cringe then Lord of The Rings Online offers a vastly better experience.

My advice would be to make a character on a realm and stick around the capital city for a bit during peak hours and see which one you like, realm choice is vital I cannot stress that enough you do not want to spend the next few months on one which you end up hating. Unfortunately there is no label next to the realm saying what percentage of the population are complete tools.

Good luck if you do decide to buy this expansion, you will most certainly need it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wrath of the Lich King, 17 Sep 2008
By J. Roberts "Azerothian" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Having played the beta from it's opening in July, I have had an oppertunity to see what the developers have been hard at work doing since Blizzcon last year. To my surprise, the results are extroindary. As they have stated on many an occasion, they have taken the good from Burning Crusade and ran with it. The quests and storyline are fresh and rarely feel tedious, the environments are stunning and the music really helps you feel immersed in the experience.

Alot of people were dissapointed with Burning Crusade and I can happily say that Wrath of the Lich King has looked back, seen the issues that the previous expansion had and moved in the opposite direction. The Death Knight hero class, which at first to me seemed inappropriate and a possible lore killer, fits in reasonably well with the story and the starting zone really makes you feel as though you are playing the very first hero class.

Some things from the old world have been changed to reflect storyline changes (E.G the removal of Lady Katrana Prestor A.K.A Onyxia from Stormwind and the return of the King.) which is refreshing and makes the game feel alot less static. In addition a new mechanic has been added that allows for a story to progress through questing that changes the environment on a client side level so that only those that have reached that point can see the changes. (An excelent example of this is during the Death Knight starting quests and later in Northrend.) which again makes you feel really immersed in the story that is being told.

This addition to an already amazing game takes the War in Warcraf to a whole new level, while in Northrend you will really feel as though your actions could really save Azeroth. Fans of the lore will also be satisfied with the return of an old villain and the effects it has on the entire world.

I would recommend this expansion for anyone that has played World of Warcraft in the past and enjoyed it, it really does give the game a fresh breath of life!

3.0 out of 5 stars Warning about pre-ordering from Amazon, 19 Oct 2008
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This is a good expansion(played the beta), but a warning about Amazon, they have now changed to have games like this shipped from a Jersey company (not Amazon) which take an additional 3 days to arrive due to coming from oversea. My last 3 preorders arrived 3 days late, and when I complained Amazon just said "tough". You also can not add next day delivery.

Places like Game.co.uk and Play.co.uk still offer the "get it the day of release" like Amazon used to.
