From Amazon.co.uk

Few monsters lend themselves better to allegory than the zombie. In the years since George Romero first set the shambling mold with Night of the Living Dead, filmmakers have been using the undead as handy substitutes for concepts as varied as mall-walking consumers, punk rockers, soccer hooligans, and every political movement imaginable. (All this, plus brain chomping.) World War Z, the mega-scale adaptation of Max Brooks's richly detailed faux-historical novel, presents a zombie apocalypse on a ginormous level never seen before on film. Somehow, however, the sheer size of the scenario, coupled with a distinct lack of visceral explicitness, ends up blunting much of the metaphoric impact. While the globe-hopping action certainly doesn't want for spectacle, viewers may find themselves wishing there was something more to, you know, chew on. Director Marc Forster and his team of screenwriters (including J. Michael Straczynski and Lost's Damon Lindelof) have kept the basic gist of the source material, in which an unexplained outbreak results in a rapidly growing army of the undead. Unlike the novel's sprawling collection of unrelated narrators, however, the film streamlines the plot, following a retired United Nations investigator (Brad Pitt) who must leave his family behind in order to seek out the origins of the outbreak. While the introduction of a central character does help connect some of Brooks's cooler ideas, it also has the curious effect of narrowing the global scale of the crisis. By the time of the third act, in which Pitt finds himself under siege in a confined space, the once epic scope has decelerated into something virtually indistinguishable from any other zombie movie. Even if it's not a genre changer, though, World War Z still has plenty to distinguish itself, including a number of well-orchestrated set pieces--this is a movie that will never be shown on airplanes--and the performances, with Pitt's gradually eroding calm strengthened by a crew of supporting actors (including Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, and a fantastically loony David Morse) who manage to make a large impression in limited time. Most importantly, it's got those tremendous early scenes of zombie apocalypse, which display a level of frenetic chaos that's somehow both over-the-top and eerily plausible. When the fleet-footed ghouls start dogpiling en masse, even the most level-headed viewer may find themselves checking the locks and heading for the basement. --Andrew Wright

5.0 out of 5 stars Full Speed Zombies 11 Nov 2013
By R. King
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Really like this film. There have been a few dodgy reviews so wasn't sure what to expect but I needn't have worried as it is fast, exciting and very very entertaining. Although I have always loved Zombie movies I have always thought to myself "how could you possibly be caught by them and eaten when they are so slow to move". That is not the case here - here they are very very fast and that would be scary. If you haven't seen this but like Zombie flicks then I am sure you will love it. Go and buy!!

Firstly, Amazon places reviews against all versions of a film so I must make clear to anyone viewing this that I have reviewed the USA release for the Unrated 3D, Blu Ray, DVD Combo set that you should be able to buy through Amazon Marketplace. Although this is a USA release it is multi-region so the Blu Ray should work in UK players (the DVD is coded Region 1 but most DVD players are multi-region anyway or can easily be made so). The Amazon link for this version can be found here World War Z. [Blu-ray] [US Import]. Note: the UK 3D release out appears to be the same as the USA one so much of what follows will hopefully be of use to purchasers of the UK release.

Main reason for my purchase of the USA set is the earlier release date plus fact it contains the 'Unrated' cut of the film. I first watched World War Z at the cinema and thoroughly enjoyed it and, being a fan of the zombie type films, thought I would get the USA release as it adds another 6/7 mins or so to the running time and comes complete with 3D version as well. A review of each as follows:

Unrated edition: The unrated cut is only available on the standard 2D Blu Ray. Watching it and I had to wonder where the extra scenes were as they were not immediately apparent. This is surely a good thing as the film was just as gripping as the theatrical cut with no obvious filler that didn't need to be put back anyway other than to cater for the market I fall for in buying editions with cut scenes reinstated etc.,! Checking after the film finished and it appears the extra 6 or 7 minutes were spread throughout the film with additional 'gore' for scenes where the theatrical version cut away (head impacts etc.,).

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Idea But A Rather Predictable Treatment 25 Dec 2013
By Charles Vasey TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:DVD
Max Brook's book produced a very ride ranging treatment of the "practicalities" of zombie warfare. The film concentrates on some areas of the book but also adds a Walking Dead family (you know the ones, mom seems oblivious to people being eaten, and the kids cannot obey even the simplest command) plus a bad attack of the Noisy Moves (in which even the simplest stroll is accompanied by stuff being dropped, kicked, knocked over or creaking). The result is a simple grab at involvement where a cleverer treatment might have impressed more. The zombies were very good with their ant-like speed and tactics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie 11 Nov 2013
By SanR
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
For anyone who enjoys Zombie movies, this is one of the best I've seen. Action packed and intense in places. It dips into elements from the Max Brooks' novel of the same name (which I thought was a great read). The beauty of it is that it didn't need to resort to showing extreme gore. The psychological impact of such an apocalypse was seen in the mindless way the zombies attacked - at speed and in great numbers.
The Bluray has additional footage that blended in so seamlessly that it was hard to believe that it was not there in the theatrical version.

5.0 out of 5 stars World War Z review 6 Nov 2013
Format:DVD
World War Z is ultimately classed as a great Zombie film. Don't usually watch Bead Pitt films but I can safely say that he was excellent throughout the film. Watched this film in the cinema and was gripped as soon as the film started. Now can't wait for the sequel movie to be produced and come out in the cinema.
