DVD Description

A testament to the courage and sacrifice made by those who paid the ultimate price for victory. Shot entirely in colour, this award-winning series recounts the complete history of World War II as never seen before. WWII was a truly global conflict fought in extraordinary terrain over four continents. This remarkable programme takes us right to the front lines of combat and into the daily lives of servicemen taking on their enemy face to face. Packed with dramatic colour footage, this programme puts you at the front lines but also at home with the civilian population, who suffer the burden of rationing, terror and concern for their loved ones overseas. This is a story of bravery in the face of extreme hardship.

FACE TO FACE
Shot in colour, this remarkable programme takes us right to the front lines of combat and into the daily lives of the servicemen taking on their enemy face to face. They endured a terrifying and emotional struggle to stay  live while experiencing appalling suffering and being pushed beyond the limits of hope.

BATTLEGROUND
WWII was a truly global conflict fought in extraordinary terrain over four continents. This terrain was paid for in blood as thousands of men found their final resting place in the ground for which they fought. This emotional programme is a testament to the courage and sacrifice made  by those who paid the ultimate price for victory.

AIR WAR
Of all the assignments a serviceman might find himself undertaking  during WWII, flying seemed to offer the greatest promise of glory. What
was not apparent to anyone in the early years of the conflict was that flying would become the most dangerous job of the war. Packed with dramatic colour footage, this programme puts you in the cockpit with
the courageous Second World War airmen.

ANCHORS AWEIGH
For the sailors and submariners who fought in WWII, combat at sea differed radically from any previous conflict. We find ourselves shoulder to shoulder with mariners battling Kamikazes aboard huge warships, or guiding troops to the shore off a tiny landing craft. We also venture  beneath the waves with the brave and elite sailors aboard submarines.

FUELLING THE FIRE
It has been said that war is a hungry beast that devours everything in  its path. In order to feed that beast in WWII, the leaders of the allied forces challenged themselves to create the most advanced supply  system in the history of warfare. This is the story of the men and  women who worked to sustain the war effort by delivering the supplies.
Without them the war-machine would have ground to a halt.

HOMEFRONT
WWII touched the lives of not only the millions of combatants at the front lines but also the civilian populations at home. Women, children and the elderly bravely shouldered their duties while suffering the burden of rationing, terror and concern for their loved ones overseas. This is a story of bravery in the face of extreme hardship.

I have only looked at two of the discs in this set so far and they are all about how AMERICA won the the war. The title of the disc set should read: America_And How We Won The War.

This set is an absolute waste of £16.00, it is rubbish. The narrator never shuts up, the film quality is poor, the sound is'nt too bad, but wobbly in parts, nothing like the excellent quality of WORLD AT WAR series. The best place for this set of DVDs is in the DUSTBIN, where mine are going right now. The only part of this set worth keeping are the DVD cases. Do not waste your money. Like I said I have only seen two of the discs and I will not even bother to glance at the rest of them, the narration drives you nuts. If you want learn about World War Two, buy the WORLD AT WAR Set.

I wish I'd read the reviews. I am an actor and was hoping for a UK based viewpoint for research. The picture of the RAF plane threw me a red herring. THis is an incessantly glib, non stop narration of a very simplistic view of the war- from an American perspective. Informative if you want that, and don't like to think too much about the history you're being spoon fed. But if you can listen to the terrible terrible TERRIBLE acting voiceovers without reaching for the remote, you did better than me. The "english" voice overs need to be heard to be believed.

The thing I learned- read reviews before buying.

The boxset maybe long, but from start to finish it seems to forget any other country other than USA exists. Shame really. Do not buy.

This box set is worth viewing. The hour on submarine warfare is particularly interesting. All other content is original and informative. The title of the set was misleading for me. Read more
