Product Description

Review

"A splendid collection filled with insights, intelligence and inspiration. It can help us all teach " and learn " about the awesome task of living wisely on the earth."

Product Description

Perhaps unprecedented in scope, this anthology explores current environmental and ecological issues amidst the various worldviews, cultures, and traditions that constitute the world's major religions. Presenting a global conceptual landscape in part one with selections that focus on the spiritual and environmental crises associated with modernity, this volume, with typical skillful editing in part two, distills all of the major world religions' perspectives-Eastern, Western, and newly emerging-on contemporary ecological issues. Part three rounds out this extraordinary collection of insights with an exploration of other cross-cutting motifs in today's enviro-cultural criticism, including radical environmentalism, ecofeminism, ecojustice, and the rising voice of the Global South.

5.0 out of 5 stars Many Light Bulb Articles, 18 July 2009
By maclarry "maclarry" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: World Views, Religion and the Environment: A Global Anthology (Paperback)
Having read some articles in this textbook for class, I came across some readings that opened my mind to new ideas that I never considered.

For example, I never considered myself to be a religious person because I didn't want to be told how to live my life. However, after I read Loy's article in the textbook, I discovered that I did buy into a religion called market capitalism, and that I didn't think completely for myself, as I had previously thought. Unconsciously, market capitalism was telling me how to live (by keep working), how to percieve the world (by being competitive), and how much I was humanly worth (by the amount of money I made).

This textbook has many eye opening articles as the one mentioned above, and some of your light bulbs may get lit too.

This is a fantastic collection of essays pertaining to the subject matter at hand. I wish the article pertaining to Australian Aboriginal thinking was around and available to mail to Durkheim x amount of years ago! As an educator this would be a book I would seriously consider using if you have the opportunity to teach a Religions of the World Course, or, implementing it in a new "Religions and the Environment" course which is in serious need at the moment. If your like me and you like to sit around and read textbooks this is a great grab...you will not be dissappointed.
