United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital Stereo ), French ( Subtitles ), Spanish ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Cast/Crew Interview(s), Commentary, Deleted Scenes, Interactive Menu, Making Of, Music Video, Photo Gallery, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: In "The World Unseen," a trembling soap of racial oppression and lesbian longing, three Indian women endure South African apartheid in the 1950s with strategies as diverse as their personalities. For Amina (Sheetal Sheth), it's all about defiance. Invariably attired in snazzy men's wear, she flouts the law by owning a cafe with the racially mixed Jacob (David Dennis) and encouraging mixed-race dining. For Miriam (Lisa Ray), complete subservience to her controlling husband, Omar (Parvin Dabas), and two children is the way to go. Only the slinky Farah (Natalie Becker) has found relief beneath the radar, sleeping with Omar while Miriam scrubs. Directed by Shamim Sarif and based on her novel of the same title, "The World Unseen" never begins to tap the talent at its disposal. ...The World Unseen

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Star, 3 Jun 2009
By
Pearce (South Africa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The World Unseen [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
The story is set in a dusty location (area) in Cape Town (South Africa) demarcated for Indians, in a time where apartheid has just been enforced by a white supremacy Government. The love stories between the two main characters are built around a world where people of colour are suppressed and a world where culture devoids woman the right to think. Even through all this turmoil, love is found in the strangest place. The two main woman actresses portray their roles down to precision, even to the last detail, the accents. I did feel that more time and focus could have been spent on the relationship between the two women. Never the less, this is a 5 star performance. The actresses are stunningly gorgeous, the storyline well written and well presented. A very thought provoking movie, which caused a mix of emotions, tears and joy.

4.0 out of 5 stars short but sweet, 21 Jun 2009
This review is from: The World Unseen [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
An interesting story and I've since bought the book, as the film is quite short and seems to skip to the highlights of the story. In this respect there's not much depth to the characters, although they do try (in the limited time they have). Despite that it's enjoyable and a different take on the usual high-school or rom-com 'girl-meets-girl' story. There are a couple of linering moments between the women but if you're looking for sex scenes forget it - this is the 1950s in south africa afterall! For the price I would defo recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant film, 27 Mar 2011
This review is from: The World Unseen [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
this is a beautiful movie with an interesting story line and good acting. Was really impressed by the last one especially as the acting in "Can't think straight" wasn't particularly great. I like the way the film also covers historical facts on racism in South Africa. And of course it is very romantic and emotional. Watched it on one breath and the end came as a surprise as they left it open. One of my favourite movies now.
