Synopsis

In this drama set in 1950s South Africa, two women find love in surprising places. Lisa Ray (WATER) stars as Miriam, a married mother, while Sheetal Sheth (AMERICAN CHAI) plays Amina, a progressive owner of a cafe. Though the women appear to have little in common, they are instantly drawn to one another, and a forbidden affair begins. THE WORLD UNSEEN is a stirring film that addresses issues of race, gender, and desire. Shamin Sarif directs this adaptation of her own novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Star, 3 Jun 2009
By Pearce (South Africa) - See all my reviews
The story is set in a dusty location (area) in Cape Town (South Africa) demarcated for Indians, in a time where apartheid has just been enforced by a white supremacy Government. The love stories between the two main characters are built around a world where people of colour are suppressed and a world where culture devoids woman the right to think. Even through all this turmoil, love is found in the strangest place. The two main woman actresses portray their roles down to precision, even to the last detail, the accents. I did feel that more time and focus could have been spent on the relationship between the two women. Never the less, this is a 5 star performance. The actresses are stunningly gorgeous, the storyline well written and well presented. A very thought provoking movie, which caused a mix of emotions, tears and joy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brought to life, 30 May 2009
I had ordered a book with the same title over the internet and started to read this book and couldn't put it down until I had finished it all within one sitting, the movie brought to life all that I imagined from the book, it was beautifully directed and the actresses bring the story to life. A lovely film and storyline, had everything you want from a movie, happiness, lose, love and friendship. Definitely worth a watching,
the scenery of South Africa and the history of the Indian diaspora was fascinating aswell as upsetting to see how things used to be. I'm glad things have changed and are still changing. This story made me think alot, (in a good way!)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must See, 10 May 2009
I ordered the film after reading the book and was definitely impressed. Lisa Ray and Sheetal Sheth are amazing actresses and the script, scenery and acting all go together to make a gem of a film.
Would definitely recommend to anyone. Best film Ive seen in a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars The World Unseen
Beautifully filmed story focusing no only on the main characters but also on the political problems of the time, having discrimination as a main subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars short but sweet
An interesting story and I've since bought the book, as the film is quite short and seems to skip to the highlights of the story. Read more
