This album is great but is hugely let down by the number by Caledon who do not sing well even for classical singers - great to have traditional scottish stuff but it needs to be sung in a less operatic way especially when they are not great at the operatic stuff!
This highlight of the Album is definitly Bryn Terfel and Shirley Bassey's rendition of "The World in Union" the rugby world cup anthem, the stirring theme and lyrics were written for this sort of performance. Bassey and Terfel provide an emotionally charged and stirring melody while the Welsh male voice choirs provide superb backing. Also included in the album are Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's version which is also excellent, as well as other rugby classics Sweet Low, Jerusalem, Bread of Heaven, Waltzing Mathilda and Flower of Scotland. Rugby is a great game and these songs truly inspire any rugby fan, listen to this album and imagine your team lifting the Webb-Ellis Trophy.
As a battle hardened rugby fan I awaited this CD withmuch anticipation. My wait was not in vain. This Collection is excellent, with outstanding singing which makes the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. As a Scot I was dissapointed in Caledon's version of Flower of Scotland which, with there very operatic approach, seemed at ods with the true nature of the song...but this is only my view and the rest of the CD more than made up for it!
