From Amazon.co.uk

Set in the aftermath of the tragic attack on New York’s Twin Towers, World Trade Center is a carefully constructed, respectful and dignified tribute the acts of heroism on that terrible day. It follows the real-life story of John McLoughlin and William J Jimeno, two Port Authority officers trapped amidst the rubble and chaos of September 11th. The film spends time with them, those trying to rescue them and their families, as their story hauntingly unfolds, and what emerges is a focused, human story, compellingly told.

Surprisingly, World Trade Center’s director is Oliver Stone, whose back catalogue is a mixture of provocative, controversial and challenging films. Here, he wisely pulls back, choosing to let the story unfold with little intervention. His direction is clever and underplayed, which serves to enhance the feeling of claustrophobia and emotion. It’s Stone’s best film in some time, even if it rarely feels like he’s the man behind the camera.

He’s helped by some fine turns from his cast, led by Nicolas Cage and Maria Bello, and while there’s an argument that the screenplay could use a little pruning, World Trade Center is nonetheless a strong piece of work. True, Paul Greengrass’ stunning, devastating United 93 is a superior film, but in this case, that’s beside the point. Because World Trade Center is still an important, well made film in its own right, and one that deserves, and perhaps needs, to be seen.--Simon Brew

5.0 out of 5 stars I was moved 26 April 2008
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
If this film was about anything else, maybe I would give it a bad review. But because of the subject matter I was moved to tears. I was watching it on my computer (I have a Bluray/HdDvD combo drive) and had to pause a few times to get control over myself (the brief shot of a person jumping out of a WTC window was one such scene). The film does a good job of reminding you the significance of 9/11 as one of the most depressing days in recent memory. I'm not a knee-jerk patriotic type, but I still found it difficult to keep myself from being affected by the power of the memories of that day. (I'm American but I have lived in the U.K. for a long time).

In terms of the Blu-Ray quality, there were some pretty good scenes but overall it didn't really stand out from a picture clarity standpoint. I haven't seen the DVD version though, so I can't say whether it is any better. I can't unhesitantly recommend it on picture quality though, so I suggest you rent it first to decide whether you want to add it to your permanent collection.

2.0 out of 5 stars Still Shell-Shocked 18 Mar 2007
Format:DVD
I got the impression in this movie that Oliver Stone wanted to say something about 9/11 but still doesn't know what that is. He used to be great at posing an opinion, but this film seems to stagger around in a daze picking through a rubble of ideas. I found it to be quite harrowing in places, espescially as the men buried alive struggled to accept their fate. I also felt it portrayed the bravery of the rescue teams really well. But the biggest flaw was one of boredom. My finger hovered over the fast-forward button as we had yet another pseudo-philosophical dialogue over What Is Happening to America? I expect a bit more from Oliver Stone, and I should have been warned when I saw that Nicolas Cage was the lead. That man can ham it up, even when buried immobile under concrete for the majority of the film. Disappointing, unmoving and ultimately dull.

2.0 out of 5 stars A real Shame. 15 April 2007
Format:DVD
Very dissapointing. I know it is based on true events. So much happened on that day, they should of shown a bit more from the other heroes of the day. Very long winded and not quite sure what they were trying to achieve with this film. Alot of people lost there lifes trying to help, and I have seen better documentaries.
