Book Description

4 Oct 2004
All textiles epitomize the cultures that make them, from the silk brocade saris of India to North American patchwork quilts. Interestingly, societies separated by vast distances have developed similar solutions to design and construction while producing a dazzling diversity of styles. This is the first book to illustrate (in nearly 800 sumptuous colour photographs and drawings) the whole range of traditional handmade textiles from all over the globe, classified by materials and technique rather than age or country. Eight sections cover all aspects of production, each giving a summary of characteristics, making and geographical distribution. Every kind of textile is covered: non-loom and loom-woven, painted and printed, dyed, sewn, embroidered and embellished. Completed by a glossary, further reading and information on collections with public access, this is an unrivalled guide for anyone interested in collecting or making and designing textiles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and informative 29 Feb 2008
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is perfect for anyone who loves textiles (obviously!). I generally buy textile books for the images which are fantastic in this case, but this book is also very informative. I definately prefer it to the smaller world textiles book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A coffee table book with erudition 21 April 2011
By Jo Bennie VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
Gillow and Sentence have brought their wealth of experience and learning to create a wonderful well organised book that describes in well written words, full colour photographs and line drawings, pretty much every kind of textile art there is.
They divide the contents into 8 sections: materials, non-loom textiles, loom-woven textiles, dyes, sewing, embroidery and embellishment, then each section then is divided further into individual double page spreads covering single subject areas. There is some repetition given cross overs but very little and the book is worked chronologically, so if a subject is covered in a previous section it is only touched on and referred back to.

What I really loved was that this book isn't just pictures, the authors skillfully write a precis of every technique which is easy to understand and concise, not easy given just how complex each subject is and they are giving each only a double page spread.
