5.0 out of 5 stars East and West 16 May 2010
Format:DVD
After reading the book, I loved this movie when I saw it so many years ago and was thrilled when I saw it had been transfered to DVD. It is an excellent transfer and it really lives up to my memories. Suzie is such a loveable creature and at times her imagination runs a little wild. She endures extreme hardship while living a life of pretence. William Holden is very good. This film can be quite funny at times while also being extremely sad at others. Nancy Kwan is such a beautiful woman and the technicolor photography really does her justice. This is one of my all time favourite movies.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this film! 28 April 2009
Format:DVD
I bought this on a whim - I had seen it once, years ago, and had just got back from a wonderful romantic trip to Hong Kong. Now at first glance this may not seem like the perfect 'romance' for reminiscing! But the charm, the power and the subtle but insistant message of this film are such that it doesn't matter.

Looking at it from a distance of 40 years doesn't dim it - the restraint that film-makers had imposed on them, and which they worked within, give rein to imaginative ways to make a point, to suggest a situation, without having to put it right up there on the screen leaving nothing to the viewer's imagination. I love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Spectacularly un-PC 2 Sep 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
This film is regularly derided in no uncertain terms by film cognoscenti who spent two weeks once on a far east package tour. The verite cinematography, by Geoffrey Unsworth, is worth the price alone; it camptures a Hong Kong now gone and greatly missed by more than a few--including the same aforementioned sneer artists who, naturally, abhor "globalization." Even today, the insightful visitor to the new and unimproved Far East will recognize the basic truth in the way commercial love in this setting is acted out: I presume everyone involved did extensive research.... The movies failings are of its time--in particular the ending. But you could read a thousand books and learn less than watching this for two hours. Romantic? Of course. Read between the lines. This film is spectacularly un-PC.

5.0 out of 5 stars 53 Years on and it is still fantastic 3 April 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the way movies used to be. No 'special effects' other than the odd bit of studio rear projection and absolutely no computer generated graphics because they hadn't been invented. No car chases and no swearing either.
Simply a great story, well acted with a start, a middle and an end, which remained truthful to the original book on which it was based.
Beyond all of this it was special to me at an individual klevel becuase I spent a happy year in South East Asia in 1959 and so well remember the Hong Kong shown in this film - especially the iconic Star Ferry that still plies Victoria Harbour and which features strongly in the first 20 minutes or so ... Yes! I wallowed in nostalgia.
Even so, I recommend this to anyone with an interest in the way Hong Kong used to be, with an appreciation of great acting and direction ... and if that's not enough for you ... Wow! Nancy Kwan is the girl of my teen dreams. Now we are both m-u-c-h older.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable Hongkong fairy tale. 30 Sep 2009
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I saw this film many years ago probably on a small black and white television. To see it now from the dvd in colour and on a large screen is a revelation. What an enjoyable film! Evidently it was not well received by the critics of the time who, it seems to me, did not see it for what it is - a fairy tale love story - and all the better for that! Critics in my opinion sometimes seem to be looking for documentary realism / social rawness and cannot see romanticism because the film is shot in a realistic way. Undoubtably the film is helped no end by the performance of Nancy Kwan. It really is hard to believe that this was her first film. She is obviously a totally natural screen actress. The test of a film for me is - has it got repeatability and since I have done that in part and whole, I guess I rate it highly. With the added bonus attraction of seeing Hong Kong as it was in the 1960s.

4.0 out of 5 stars The world of Suzie Wong 3 Aug 2009
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Still as good as I remember the film when I saw it in the cinema, many years ago. Even more interesting now - it allows you to see 'old Hong Kong'and is not politically correct (at all!) It rings so true - and the author of the story does not seem to have written any other stories - I wish he had. This actress is such a pleasure to watch, too although William Holden could have been made of wood.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very evocative 9 Jun 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Loved this movie and I have seen it many times. The main reason being it brough back memories of Hong Kong and the Luk Kwok Hotel where it was filmed. I have stayed in that hotel but many years later.

I would recommned it to anyone who has an interest in Hong Kong.
