They said it couldn’t be done! A science fiction show on national television? The network didn’t believe it would work. It was the 1960s. Would the public accept a nonhuman hero with demonic pointed ears? A black female lieutenant? Impossible!

This is the story of a phenomenon—a story as strange and wonderful, in its way, as the Enterprise’s trip through space. Even the power of the networks couldn’t stop it. And so Star Trek went on to make entertainment history. Here is the complete inside story of what happened behind the scenes of the Star Trek universe, from scriptwriters’ memos to special effects, plus revealing personal interviews with the series’ legendary stars.

The legend of Star Trek lives in the hearts of millions—now, discover the truth behind the fiction. Writer David Gerrold was on the set, watching it happen: the feuds, the fun, the love—the magic that is Star Trek. A must-have for “Trekkies” of all ages, Worlds of Star Trek includes more than 50 pages of photos from your favorite episodes and stills from all three movies.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good to see this book available again! 29 Jan 2014

My older brother owned David Gerrold's "The World of Star Trek" when I was a little kid, and like so many of his books and comics I read it several times. It's a well-written overview of Star Trek as it was in the years immediately after the show's initial run. Gerrold has a lot to say both good and bad about the show and notes a few things he would have done differently - some of which we many years later saw incorporated into "The Next Generation". There's also a fascinating and now very nostalgic look at Trek fandom as it existed in those days.

This is a greatly entertaining book well worth the attention of any Star Trek fan, and for the price a rather incredible bargain as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful and Seminal Work about one of the Most Important and Loved Television Series 28 Jan 2014

I read this book when it first came out and it figured in a piece of television research I did at the time. If you like Star Trek,or are just interested in the a behind the scenes look at the show, especially everything that developed around it:rabid fans and media extensions, then this is the book to read. It covers all the original material plus was revised and updated to cover the phenomenon as it continued to evolve. An important look at Star Trek, television, fandom and brand extension.
5.0 out of 5 stars A new copy for me! 20 Mar 2014

Way back in the 70's, I got hooked on this SF show called Star Trek. I bought lots of books about it, the stories written from the episodes, and other books about the series. David Gerrold's The World of Star Trek was a favorite then, and I am happy to have it in my possession again. I was already a Science Fiction fan at age 15, and Mr. Gerrold's books were a treasure. His books about Star Trek led me to read almost everything else he ever wrote. I recommend all of his works highly.

Lots of great info and insights into the making of the series and the first three films. My only complaint is that the Kindle version does not include the photos that are part of the print edition. Would love to see this updated to include Trek's more recent evolutions.

This is one of my favorite books of all time, and is directly responsible for my becoming a Trekkie/Trekker/Trekkist (pick one) back in 1973. I have said so publicly many times and say so again.
