Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Best-selling fantasy series tend to spin off nonfiction books about their otherworld settings, such as The Atlas of Tolkien's Middle-Earth and The Discworld Companion. Robert Jordan's immense "Wheel of Time" sequence began with The Eye of the World (1990) and still continues, with eight fat novels published and more to come. This lavish companion volume first appeared in 1997 and has been repackaged at a bargain price--though not updated to cover the events of Jordan's 1998 instalment, The Path of Daggers. It goes into great detail about the saga's vast historical back-story, the interlocking systems of magic, the many countries, races, institutions, power-wielders and monsters, and much more. There are over seventy full-colour illustrations and maps. Fans of the series will appreciate this as an attractive coffee-table volume which, like Tolkien's detailed appendices in The Lord of the Rings, casts light on mysteries and trivia that didn't fit into the narrative. Newcomers may be less enchanted as Jordan's considerable talent is for storytelling and cumulative narrative power: this background material is ambitious in scope but not wildly original, featuring familiar fantasy landmarks like a Pit of Doom (and, for variety, Mountains of Doom). A must for Jordan addicts; others should try the novels first and see what the excitement's all about. --David Langford --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Glossary, 27 Feb 2007

If you read the other reviews you will see that the artwork has been slated. Not a problem for the paperback edition because there is NO artwork at all. Just a few maps.

Luckily I bought the book for the background information. And there's plenty of that. Don't expect an exciting read. This book should be regarded as a much extended glossary. And in that capacity it does a much better job than, say... The Rivan Codex.

One last point to note. There are a couple of plot spoilers contained within. (I read it after The Great Hunt - book 2). It didn't bother me, but plotwise, I believe it should be read after A Crown of Swords - book 7.

I Hope this review helps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it, if you ignore the artist's impressions, 3 April 2000
By A Customer
I have leafed through this book and have placed it on order, and think it is well worth the money. However, I am glad to see that I am not the only one who was bitterly disappointed in the illustrations. The characters were similar to a "Mr. Potato Head" in that all the characters looked identical with just the hair colour changed or clothing. And when the simplest details such as that are wrong, it brings down the rating of the book. I am sure I am not the only one who would have given it a five-star rating, if it hadn't been for the poor work of the artist. I am eagerly awaiting the ninth novel, and have been since I first completed the eighth- bring it on! Hopefully, there will be a second edition of the World of Robert Jordan, with up to date information and new illustrations!

3.0 out of 5 stars A fairly good plot-filler but the drawings are pathetic, 26 Jan 2000

While this book was a quite good plot-filler and provides an excellent insight into the characters and forces in the books, I was VERY disappointed with the drawings. Could whoever had drawn them at LEAST have read the books first so that they could have got things like hair colors, general appearance and little things like, oh say WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE right?!?!?!? It's like reading about a set of characters, then reading a book with pictures from an alternate dimension or something, what the hell happened??? I was very irritated by this after being extremely impressed by the quality of writing in the actual books, I hope if there is a sequel RJ gets a better artist, or at least one who knows what to draw...
