Though a man of eclectic tastes 'World Music' is usually a turn-off term for me being more into contemporary Brit & US bands, singer/songwriters, etc. When this arrived as one of my 3 albums of the month from Rough Trade Album Club was ready to send it straight back! But..... come on, give it a chance! And I did. And... I like it. REALLY like it. Funky, cool, and not too "Worldy". Just enjoyable vibes and grooves to a psychedelic beat. So lose your prejudice, get down, enjoy!!!

If the Eden Project session of Live 8 sparked an interest in the sounds of Africa, yet you are unable to make up your mind which of the myriad of artistes you should buy first, then perhaps you might like to take a first tentative step courtesy of this fine record.

It's a truly insightful glimpse at how African artists interpreted the sounds of Sly & The Family Stone, Hendrix, and others during the early days of the 70's. It's an interesting mix of styles, with input from representatives of Benin, Cameroon and Ghana. How does it sound? A mix of salsa/traditional african rhythms and great beats.

Any Dj's looking for a tune or two to drop into a funky breaks/soul party will gain some envious looks if they chose a number of these tracks.

A very interesting, playable and funky proposition!

Best of the Bunch 9 Mar 2005
By Joshua R. Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is volume three in Luka Bop's World Psychedelic Classics Series which easily bests the Shuggie Otis comp from a few years ago and equals the Os Mutantes one from 2000 ( I think).

The music and CD packaging is first class all the way. The CD is even enhanced to include a video/ film from Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou Dahomey.

Though this may be a psych comp the music is very much a funk-jazz or soul jazz thing. The artists within borrowed from contemporary North American funk and Cuban rhythms popular in the late 60's and 70's and came up a sound that is best described as a rush to the head and body. If you have any love for African music or any kind of music please get this CD. Luka Bop has out done itself this time. Now can they release another Bollywood compilation.

On a side note the Moussa Doumbia track is edited. What happened to the guitar solo, free jazz sax and the intense screaming that round out the song? I have an mp3 from the original record and it is life changing.

Funky For the Money 19 Oct 2005

If you like funk, or rock, or jazz, or just love good music you will like this CD. It is like a mix between James Brown and Jimi Hendrix. Every song is amazing and they are all different. Sure you may not understand the language, but funk is international. Hands down worth the price.

bizarre find 13 Sep 2005

I'm a dj in Hawaii and just happened to spot this treasure. It is bizarre and historically interesting as well. Unlike much other music i have heard- African beats mixed with the influence of early James Brown and psychedelia of the sixties..mind blowing!
