Book Description

A delightful small-format book that will appeal to butterfly enthusiasts, young and old, with vivid images by a leading butterfly photographer and texts by pre-eminent writers in the field.

Product Description

This book features exquisite full-page pictures of 200 butterflies from around the world, accompanied by text that is informative and engaging, including essays on butterfly migration, butterflies and the environment, gardening and watching and collecting butterflies.

The selection of butterflies is arranged by location, from the Arctic Circle to rain forests, woodlands, grasslands and deserts. Species in the book include butterflies from India, Costa Rica, Brazil, Ireland, Russia, New Guinea, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia and many North American favourites.

The richly illustrated introduction briefly describes the history of our fascination with butterflies and provides general scientific information such as the parts of a butterfly, how they grow and feed, and how to observe them.

I bought the 'World of Butterflies' for my grandson's 7th birthday. I was a little worried in case it was too sophisticated for him. However, it is not only sophisticated, but also perfect for any age. The way it is set up is simple to follow, the photographs are stunning. He immediately saw a 'Cabbage White' and looked it up and wrote a little note in the book in pencil to say the day and where he had seen it. A perfectly lovely book.

An exquisite little volume. Beautifully photographed, solidly bound and well presented.
A perfect gift for the the more humane butterfly collector.

Format:Hardcover
I was disappointed with this book as it did not match the illustrated version shown on the website (it may be a different edition) and on opening it up the hard front cover had split away from the main body of the book. As librarians we are able to repair it and we will do so but it is disappointing to have to introduce a new resource in a 'secondhand' condition. We were all delighted with the other 9 books in the order and look forward to showcasing them in the next two weeks.
