Book Description

People often complain that in history lessons at school they were taught just a few topics - the Romans, the Tudors, the Nazis - and how they have no idea at all about what happened in between. To remedy this, World History: 50 Key Milestones You Really Need to Know offers brief and stimulating outlines of key developments in the history of the world, from the beginning of agriculture 10,000 years ago to the attack on the Twin Towers on 9/11.

Each essay is accompanied by a detailed time line of dates and events, and the flavour of the period concerned is brought to life by selected contemporary quotations from figures as diverse as Aristotle, Saladin, Christopher Columbus, Suleiman the Magnificent, Galileo, Voltaire, Thomas Jefferson, Mary Wollstonecraft, Napoleon, Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill. In addition, box features throw light on a range of related topics, from Confucianism and the state to Alexander the Great's horse, and from Islamic science to the Enigma code and the atomic bomb.

From the Inside Flap

People often complain that in school history lessons they were taught just a few topics - the Romans, the Tudors, the Nazis - and how they have no idea at all about what happened in between. To remedy this, World History: 50 Key Milestones You Really Need to Know offers informative and stimulating outlines of crucial developments across all continents and ages, from the beginning of agriculture 10,000 years ago to the attack on the Twin Towers on 9/11. Ian Crofton, the author of numerous books of popular history, brings his lively style to bear in a series of essays ranging from ancient Egypt to modern China, from the Vikings and the Mongols to the French Revolution and the Cold War. Each chapter is accompanied by a detailed timeline of dates and events, and the flavour of the period concerned is brought to life by selected contemporary quotations from figures as diverse as Aristotle, Saladin, Christopher Columbus, Galileo, Thomas Jefferson, Mary Wollstonecraft, Lincoln and Winston Churchill. In addition, each brief, insightful article sheds light on a range of fascinating topics, from the Nazca Lines to Renaissance man, from Confucianism to Alexander the Great's horse, from Islamic science and the Barbary corsairs to the Enigma code and the atomic bomb. Both enlightening and stimulating, this is all the history you will ever need to know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great idea for folk who know very little history 26 Feb. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I didn't really get so much out of this book, althoughb I did soldier on thru. Some of the chapters held stuff I didn't know, but too many I already knew. It's great as an introduction to history, but if you know some already it's not as relevant

With news now a global phenomenon, I chose this book to allow me to reference quickly and efficiently how current situations came to pass. It will also be useful for my kids in later years.
