First Sentence
Architecture is an ancient and necessary art, for people have always sought shelter from the elements, and thus the beginnings of architecture are part of prehistory, the period before the development of written language. Read the first page

Good value 26 July 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a huge book and for £20 its a bargain. It goes through every era from the beginnings of civillisation, roman and greek classicism, byzantine, georgain, right through to the 21st century in which mise vander rohe, warhol and le corbusier are mentioned, briefly I must say. The chapters are incredibly long, in excess of 30 pages. I would also say that it gives too many examples, some of which aren't used as examples in academic work. This is good in conjunction with other books but is excellent as something to read out of interest rather than something for academic work. For Classical stuff read Classical architecture by Brentwall and On Architecture by Vitruvius. For examples of works by Greek Architecture

Overall it's a good book with alot of colourful pictures and diagrams. But the descriptions are not that easy to understand for the layman without looking at the glossary at the back that would explain the terminologies used. This proved to be quite of a hassle. Another problem with the book is that the number of diagrams across pages/chapters are mostly wrong! sometimes this is really frustrating because I won't be able to find the picture/diagram on the page that text directed me to...
