Book Description

25 Mar 2014

The World English Bible is a modern, high-quality, public domain translation of the Holy Bible. This edition includes both Old and New Testaments.

For readers familiar with the Amplified, NLT, and NIV translations, the World English Bible attempts to maximize the strengths and minimize the weaknesses of each. The text is based on the American Standard Version 1901 Bible, Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia Old Testament, and Byzantine Majority Text New Testament. The text of the World English Bible is in the public domain and can be quoted and distributed without limitation. It is intended to be an accessible, understandable, easy-to-copy-and-share translation of the scriptures for English-speakers around the world.

The project was conceived by Michael Paul Johnson in 1994 and was first published in 1997 by Rainbow Missions, Inc. Using the Internet, Michael and his team of volunteers continue to refine the text. This volume is a printing of the online Old and New Testaments texts as of February 23, 2014. 5.0 out of 5 stars You can't beat this for a Bible. 7 Aug 2010
By W. Brickmeier - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I tried a couple of other Kindle Bibles before finding this one. The others went back almost immediately because they were not indexed for chapter and verse and were impossible to navigate.

My husband found this one for me. I have enjoyed using it since I got it six months ago. It is well indexed. With books and chapters, you sometimes have to click twice to get where you are going, but that is no problem. The translation is good and easy to understand. You will enjoy using this Kindle version of the Bible. You can't beat the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars World English Bible 3 Mar 2010

This an easy to read Bible. There are lots of "helps" included and the words of Jesus are in a different shade of print color so they are easily distinguished from other verses or information.

4.0 out of 5 stars Public Domain, Modern English 5 Dec 2012
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The World English Bible has two qualities which, so far as I know, are a unique combination:
1) It's public domain. Users are explicitly free to copy and use it anywhere.
2) It's in modern English. There are no Thees and Thous and -eths. The language is not so full of 21st century idioms as to surprise readers, as, for example, The Living Bible and The Message sometimes (often, in the case of The Message) do. But it's not so archaic as to turn new readers off. There are some unusual words that the translators felt that they had to include, from Abaddon, and adultery to teraphim and Yahweh (which is the word used for God's name, in this translation). These uncommon words are explained in a glossary.

The biggest flaw is the rudimentary navigation. The "Go to" doesn't so much as go to the Table of Contents. There IS a Table of Contents, however, and the first thing a new user of this edition should do is to find that Table and Bookmark it, so that it turns up in "View My Notes & Marks." When you go to the Table of Contents, you get links to the book of your choice (Proverbs, for example). There is no way to get to Proverbs 15, or Psalm 75, once you get to Psalms or Proverbs, save by flipping pages until you get there, or by searching for it (unless, of course, you have previously Bookmarked it).

There are hyperlinked notes, to related passages, or to alternate renderings, but no maps, charts, or other helps.

There is an on-line version, at [...], which is public domain, and is free. You can go to a selected chapter more easily with that version, and the on-line version includes the Apocrypha, which is not in the edition reviewed here. But the on-line version requires an active Internet connection, and you can't see adjacent chapters at once -- to get from Romans 3 to Romans 4, you have to start over, whereas in the edition under review, you can see adjacent chapters following or preceding each other, at the same time, or flip back and forth between chapters that are close together, without starting over.

The price of this Kindle version is good, less than $2. It's a bargain at that price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite translation, complete on kindle 8 Jun 2011

The WEB is my favorite translation of the Bible. It is easy to read and I like a lot of the translation decisions. One thing that confuses me is some parsgraphs are in red letters, but they are not Jesus' words. If anyone knows what that is for, please comment and let me know.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cheap as an ebook but lacking. 18 Aug 2012
By John Alldredge - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
My download doesn't have an interactive Table of Contents-you can jump to a book but not to the beginning of any chapter except Chapter 1.

There are brief interactive text notes but not much else in the way of study helps.

I don't think I'll be using this much.
