Together, both sections combine to present an inspiring record of courage and achievement. About the Author
John Parker, a writer and journalist all his working life, has authored three dozen books and published more than 75 editions worldwide in his long career, including many acclaimed military and investigative projects, as well as numerous high-profile biographies. His interest in military and naval subjects, however, has consumed much of his working life in recent years, inspired not so much by the examination and recording of past events, vital though that is, but in seeking greater insight into the heroic efforts and sheer creative steadfastness of the lifeblood of any military activity: the men (and latterly women) and their machines. His books have been noted for their wealth of personal recollections of those at the sharp end of military activity and he has relied upon their testimony, gathered from either personal interviews or documentary and tape-recorded accounts recovered from regimental and national archives in Britain, Europe and America, acquiring in the process an outstanding personal record of human endeavour and inventiveness that has abounded, wherever and whenever the need became pressing. Of particular interest was the unprecedented access he was given on approval from the Ministry of Defence for his history of the security-conscious Special Boat Service, for which he as able to interview many former and existing members of that organization which famously combined the use of Special Forces and submarines during World War II and beyond. This book is a must for any submarine novice. The books elongated title really does justice to the books content, in that the book provides for a detailed and illustrated guide to the history of submarine development. All types (class) of submarines are illustrated: from Nautilus (1800's) to Virginia (2007).
The book details early submarine development with numerous passages of text and B/W illustrations. The book progresses from early submersible development onto submarine operations during WW1 & WW2 - using well laid out passages of text to detail real-life story and exploits of submarines in battle, whilst in addition providing the reader with an in-sight into the hardship and bravery of the sub-mariner. Following the ending of the Second World War the book provides detail of submarine development during the Cold War. Once again the book uses numerous passages of text and colour illustrations. All the major Cold War - America, British and Russian boats are list and illustrated in colour - along with data-table detailing boat performance and armaments. The book concludes with a glossary of the acronyms and technical terms used within the text.

The first part of the book contains the history of submarines and the
second part is a directory of submarines from 1900-2007. There is also a two page glossary in the back. This is a really nice book, however, it does not include a listing of all the submarines in each class. Other related books inclued: Submarines War Beneath the Waves from 1776 to the Present Day by Robert Hutchinson; The Illustrated Directory of Submarines of the World by David Miller; United States Submarines by the Naval Submarine League. It was very amazing read this book, give you a good knowledge of the evolution of nuclear power and all kind of submarines in the world. Tells you about history, accidents and weapon sistems. For the people interesting in join the submarine fleet I do recommend this book.

This is a fine book on submarines, covering the history and pretty well up-to-date, and all in one place. Not exactly a scholarly study, but earns its title of encyclopedia.
