Book Description

This is a big book on a big subject. The world's Test cricket grounds are big slices of real estate, even though the real action takes place on only 22 yards of wicket. This book shows the major sporting arenas all around the globe wherever cricket's great battles are fought. Some of these grounds are over 100 years old - Lord's saw its first match in 1814 - although the spectators of that period would recognise little, if anything, of the area or the ground today. Each of the grounds has unique attributes and charm - and each illustration here provides a distinctive and colourful vantage point. It includes 200 photograph captions that are enlivened with anecdotes from Dickie Bird MBE, who umpired in 66 Test Matches from 1973 to 1996. Each ground photograph (by Patrick Eagar) is accompanied by a brief history and statistical section. Nearly fifty grounds from ten different countries are included, including some (such as Worcester and Hampshire) for aesthetic reasons alone.

Not by "Dickie" Bird 27 Sep 2009
Format:Hardcover
First of all, the author of this book is Michael Heatley and not "Dickie" Bird.

I'm only awarding three stars. Although most of the photographs are excellent, one or two are distinctly average - the one of Durban on pages 136 and 137 being somewhat below average.

Furthermore, there are far too many irritating mistakes in the text.

On several occasions the term "pitch" is used when the author means field. The pitch is the 22 yards by 10 feet in the middle.

The photograph on page 1 was taken at North Sound, Antigua, and not at St John's, Antigua.

The ground pictured on page 110 is the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.

On page 170, the GCC ground is refered to as "The Bourda". This is incorrect. The ground's name is either GCC (Georgetown Cricket Club) or Bourda. There is no definite article - Bourda is the name of the district of Georgetown where the ground is located.

The GDF helicopter pictured on page 172 is Guyanese and not "Guyanan". There is no such word as "Guyanan".

Although the book is fairly comprehensive, I would have liked to see one or two photographs of at least some of the four test grounds in Colombo (Sri Lanka).

So, to sum up, it's a useful coffee-table book which could have been excellent had the author done a little more research.
