Product Description

CD Description

England's Soul Jazz label did the music world a tremendous favour in 2004 when it released 'The World Of Arthur Russell', a collection of 11 essential tracks by dance music scientist Arthur Russell. Having worked with Allen Ginsberg, Philip Glass, and Ali Ahkbar Kahn, cellist Arthur Russell seems like one of the least likely candidates to have revolutionized disco music; yet under the various monikers Dinosaur L, Loose Joints, and Indian Ocean, among others, Russell created some of the most unique and challenging dance music ever made. Informed by his background in classical and experimental forms as well as a love of New York City's club culture of the late 1970s and early '80s, Russell took the essentials ofdisco--a basic funk groove and an irresistible hook--and ran them through the avant-garde blender. Tracks like "Go Bang" and the classic "Is It All Over My Face" immediately compel the listener to get up and move, while "Pop Your Funk" and"Let's Go Swimming" (often referred to as the only dance track that you can't actually dance to) show an artist attempting to deconstruct and transcend everything pop music is about. In addition to Russell's dance tracks, WORLD OF also contains several of his gorgeous solo cello/vocal pieces, such as the hauntingly expansive "A Little Lost" and the minimalist, almost ambient "Keeping Up." Arthur Russell was a complex, fearless artist, and this collection is an essential introduction to his singular body of work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seminal punk funk space grooves from the master, 24 April 2004
Essential collection of this man's work, who influenced so many of todaysrespected dance music makers in the early eighties. Adventurous andavante garde, smoked out space disco alongside punk funk jazz rhythms, with Russell's Sun Ra-esque wordings floating in and around, just as youthink you're getting the hang of it, another cheeky number turns your headupside down and off on another acid ride. Eclectic, camp as you like andunapologetic about it, think Larry Levan on Ketamine and you're gettingclose. With his solo work, Dinosaur L grooves, and remixes by Levan andFrancois K all getting a groove on, this is an album for all free thinkingfunkateers . Throw a party, smoke some jazz fags, turn the lights low andthrow some Russell on and watch the walls fall down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic Dance Grooves Mixing Punk and Disco in a Classic NYC Sound!, 4 Oct 2008
By Mr. G. Hassan "The Bungo Boy" (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Arthur Russell did not achieve widespread fame, celebrity status or musical acknowledgement while he was alive; it is cause for both celebration and some sadness that he has achieved all of these after his tragic death at the age of 40 in 1992.

Russell was a true musical voyuer and explorer - classically trained, his music was a rare, hypnotic fusion of dance, new wave and his classical background - that would only be possible in a city which brings so many diverse cultures together - New York City.

Russell is one of the great missing links in music and is so doing creating something genuinely new and captivating: dance music for those who love dance and dont, new wave music for those who love new wave and dont, and music pushing boundaries for those who ignore boundaries.

This is the place to start investigating Russell - a collection which combines some of his best and most acclaimed singles - recorded under a host of names - Arthur Russell, Loose Joints, Dinosaur L and several others.

It is truly fabulous that the music of Russell is finding new audiences and fans; it is also a tragedy he never lived to know how loved and influential his music would be.
