Real ATC 2 (Air Traffic Control) is an add-on to Microsoft's popular Flight Simulator 2000 for the PC. For those interested in the ground-based process of getting planes off and back onto the tarmac safely, this is a good place to start.
Recordings of real controllers from across the world are provided with over 4,000 phrases, and although these are primarily intended for use with the Microsoft simulator, they are also accessible as background ATC "chatter" from other Windows 95, 98 or 2000 flight simulators. You can change the weather, the time of day and consult many charts with impressive acronyms like SIDS, STARS, DME and VOR and obtain automatic clearance from airports. You can even change the rate at which ATC chatter is delivered which, with the ability to choose light, medium or heavy traffic options, lets you get started without information overload--albeit simulated. The random occurrence of "missed approaches, worsening weather and the odd surprise" ups the ante.
Although it shows some signs of hasty presentation--for instance, the outer box says it will run with Microsoft's Flight Simulator 98 and the inner one says it won't--it gives an extra dimension to house-bound flying. --Mark Whitehorn

One of the most depressing things about flight simulators up to MS Flight Sim 2002 is the lack of authentic ATC. I bought this thinking it was the Holy Grail, and for nearly £25.00 retail I expected it too.
All it turns out to be is a randomly generated load of background noise. Unless i'm missing something major there was no interactivity whatsoever, and a bizarre mismatch of airfields and traffic only serves to confuse rather than enhance. Plus, the recordings clearly are generated from ground air traffic sources, not inflight, which sounds even weirder still.
In fact, I only gave this two stars because i was amazed to hear my own voice had been recorded from Daytona Beach!!! (N704FE - if you can be bothered to buy it, which you shouldn't really!!)

This is one of the best add ons for Flight Simulator I've bought. It doesn't interfere with game play and is very adjustable. It's not interactive (a plus for me) and the real voices are outstanding. While running it doesn't slow down game play at all and there's hours of ATC speech. Some funny things and near misses left in there for a laugh as well. All the other so called interactive ATC's sound awful as they're constructed with mostly digitised voices. This is the real thing, get it!

What else is needed in a Flight simulator after the planes and scenery? Something in the dimension of sound (no ones developed smells yet as an add-on!). here then are tons of sounds! American and some central American voices chattering nearly constantly as you wend your way in a Cessna from Florida to Panama (ideally). Why that route? That is the route that most of these sounds were recorded on.
The thing that is useful about these ATC voices is that, although you can't obey the instructions much beyond getting out of radar contact or entering a landing pattern after flying below 5000 feet in a jet, it feels like others are there. You may be lonely at your computer screen, but at least you don't feel alone!
There are actually a number of settings that allow you to switch(in flight) between 2 sets of ATC (I think the other set is European) and there are always different combinations depending on whether you are flying a jet of prop plane. It is an adventure that works with ANY aircraft you care to fly. So if you have tons of add-ons, and are fed up with the original MS adventures in a 737 of Cessna, here is something like it for military or rotor wing aircraft at last. There seems to be an adventure concerning a medical flight tucked in there too, but it is hard to find.
Finally this is a program that will play ATC sounds with ANY windows operated Flight sim! That is because you can simply play the sonuds in the background via the included media player. So IN EFFECT this an expansion for Flight Unlimited/Fly/Combat Flight Simulator/Warbirds/....Most anything! The 2 drawbacks are that the adventure takes quite a while to load in MS Flight Sim, and the inmteractivity is minimal. apart from that, I like it!
