Product Description

The follow up to Sound of the World, Charlie Gillett's World 2006 takes us to all the corners of the musical world, with some of the greatest names in world music, such as the late Malian guitarist Ali Farka Toure, Amadou and Mariam, Bollywood diva Asha Bhosle's acclaimed collaboration with the Kronos Quartet, French nouvelle vague singer / songwriter Camille, Brazilian Tropicalia singer Gal Costa, BBC World Music Awards 2006 winners Fanfare Ciocarlia, Algerian singer Souad Massi, French rumba giants the Gypsy Kings and Ry Cooder himself. Brilliant lesser known musicians and newcomers abound too, like French guitarist and oud player Titi Robin, Argentinian outfit Kevin Johansen and The Nada, Somalian rapper K'naan, Japanese producer Blue Asia, and many more.

A lot of people gag at the term World Music. Its just a way of record stores knowing where to file stuff really. It doesn't have any other meaning. The term was invented many years ago by a group of influential figures who met to decide what could be done to give more prominence to the exciting music from around the globe that was outwith the usual western commercial scene. Charlie Gillette was one of those influential figures. A DJ who has championed internationalist folk and pop music for many many years. For the last few years Charlie has been compiling compilations on an annual basis based on the tracks which got the biggest response when he played them on his shows. I have been a big fan and have them all. This one is amongst the best. Much more enjoyable than the 2005 edidition (but even it was pretty good.) There is just too much stuff to keep a handle on around the world so let Charlie do the legwork for you. I am betting you will buy some of the album's showcased here in their entirity. From the Bollywood soul of Asha Bhosle to the African blues of the late Ali Farke Toure, this is a sumptious snapshot of music off the beaten track. Sad to hear that due to ill-health Charlie has had to cut down on his broadcasting work. I hope he will be able to continue putting out his invaluable annual compilations for many years to come.

Tired of the usual sameyness peddled in the name of world music? Tired in fact of the term world music? I mean what does that mean? Anyway...this is my favourite album in an extensive collection...catchy and melancholy and angry and giggy up and down tunes. Each track leads you to a new place.

World Music 2006 4 July 2008
By The Zen Sea - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I was really disappointed in this compilation. If you are interested in a "Top of the Pops" type of world collection, and especially latin-influenced music, then you will probably like this CD. I found it bland and unimaginative. With the fantastic music being played on BBC 3, I was rather hoping that this compilation would be a little more adventurous. Instead it sticks to the safe side, and never ventures onto the fringe....Get some of the older World CDs like World 2002 and 2004, which are particularly good. I don't think it is because music was "better" in those years, it is just a more balanced and interesting selection of music.
