Review

The projects span the simple and cheap, to the difficult and expensive. There are solutions for every worker and budget.--Peggy Mackenzie"Toronto Star" (02/23/2006)

Product Description

"Ideas and techniques for designing and building workspaces inside and outside the home."

Workshops are not just for carpenters and builders. The workshops in this book have been designed for writers, artists, furniture makers, boat builders, gardeners, collectors and those who like to maintain and restore old cars.

And workshops don't have to be expensive - one of the workshops in this book was constructed inside a closet. Even the most elaborate separate building can be put up for a very reasonable cost if you follow the instructions in this book and do the work yourself.

Based on the success of their previous best selling books - "Cabins," "Sheds" and "Playhouses You Can Build" - the author team of David and Jeanie Stiles have combined their skills and experience to walk you step-by-step through the selection and construction of a workshop that will give you years of enjoyment and add to the value of your house when you come to sell.

Just a few of the other fact-filled chapters in this book include: Why and Where to Build -- how to design and plan a workshop in your basement, garage, attic, or building an addition or separate building Building the Workshop -- construction and design fundamentals Portable and Mini-Workshops -- no matter how little space you have, you can make something worthwhile Skill Review -- a basic primer on woodworking skills that covers all the basics - no experience necessary.

Workshops You Can Build is packed with over 300 detailed and beautiful illustrations by the author which show every step of the building process in detail.

plenty of good ideas 29 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book for anyone wishing to build a workshop. There are a number of designs with step- by- step instructions, and plenty of good ideas if you wish to design your own.
There is a companion volume(also excellent)-"Sheds You Can Build",but you really don`t need both as inevitably there is a lot of overlap in the subject matter.

As this book is American all the dimensions are imperial and the designs and construction methods don't relate to building regulations for the UK. UK regs basically require no higher than 2.5m high to avoid planning permission and there are no designs for flat roofs in here. However there are some good ideas here and there are lot's of hand drawn black and white illustrations and plans but not so many pictures. You may want to look at the Shedworking book as an alternative and see my separate review for that.

Perfectly Targetted 21 Jun 2005
By Jonathan Pote - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Having supplied us so long with designs for treehouses, playhouses, and sheds, David Stiles has now produced the designs he knew we needed all along - workshops where his do-it-yourself audience can follow their dreams. Even more than in previous books, Stiles lets form follow function, so that a boatbuilder's shop is nothing like a ceramics shop. In addtion, he has beefed up the portions that includee interior layout and plans for benches, tool storage, etc. This book is great for dreaming and great for building.

money/time saver 8 Feb 2012

This is a great book for anyone who needs additional storage for tools, garden, or workshop or, in my case, for office/ study/ man-cave. the book covers all the process of planning out the space you need, laying it out,and building it from the foundation up. It is well illustrated and simplifies the process making it within the capability of most DIY'ers with average skill. I chose this book for the details on foundations and the ideas on various styles of construction. it is well worth the investment for anyone who is thinking of adding on or building a multi purpose building.

Only 3 workshop plans and tons of basic carpentry information 21 July 2011
By speedbird57 - Published on Amazon.com

Only three plans. They make up 20 pages. The other 90% of the content is everything from "you should buy a VSR (that stands for Variable Speed Reversible Drill)", to how to rough frame, to "this is what a framing square looks like". If you already know how to build and are looking for plans, this will disappoint. If you have never swung a hammer and want to get started, this is a pretty good general introduction. You could probably build a decent structure just from this book.
