I wanted to read a little known early book by Wilkie Collins called Rambles Beyond Railways an account of a walking tour in west Cornwall made in the middle of the 19th century. As it was included in this compilation I bought it that way. The individual work is a delight with chapters about Land's End and the Lizard and subjects such as the Botallack Mine and the Pilchard Fishery. The compilation is worth buying just for that.
In addition you have The Moonstone, The Woman in White and a host of other, mainly forgotten, works of Collins. There are many ebook compilations of author's works available and many, like this, advertise an 'active table of contents.' But that term seems to cover a host of sins. The fact is you can buy many collected works of authors like Shakespeare, Dickens, Hardy or Kipling that are navigable down to small units; to scenes, chapters or individual short stories. This compilation is not one of those. The 'Active Table of Contents' only takes you to the start of a given work. In the case of, for example, A Woman in White that is the start of a three volume blockbuster Victorian novel running to hundreds of pages. If you wish to go to a particular scene in the novel or if, when reading, you wish to look back at an earlier section and you have not put in your own highlight then this edition does not help you. Ok it's cheap and it's the whole works of Wilkie Collins but the publishers have made little effort and taken little thought in compiling it and it doesn't compare well with what some other publishers are doing, though unfortunately so far as I can see no one has done it yet for Wilkie Collins.
UPDATE February 2012 A search for Wilkie Collins complete editions will now show that better editions are available.

If you're a fan of Wilkie Collins then you won't need a review of the books. The important thing for this review is that the collection is complete and well-formatted.

If you're new to this author, he was a contemporary of Charles Dickens and writes in a similar style. Well worth an investigation - The Woman In White is a good place to start.

Get this set while you still can for a mere dollar. In the pre-Kindle days I spent many hours trying to obtain WC's works. Now, just about any novel I ever wanted to read by him is in this set. Technically, it is not a "complete works" set. (Delphi claims to have that--but at three times the cost of this set. And much in that complete set is obscure stuff that is not high on anybody's wish list.) The formatting of the text is fine and the TOC takes you directly to the many titles listed--though not to the specific items within his "Little Novels." A minor nuisance for those who wish to arrange their Kindle books in alphabetical order is that this will appear under "Wilkie" rather than "Collins." But for all that, what you really want is pretty much all here, conveniently bundled and fairly-priced.
