Book Description

5 July 1998 1853263974 978-1853263972 New edition

Wilde's works are suffused with his aestheticism, brilliant craftsmanship, legendary wit and, ultimately, his tragic muse. He wrote tender fairy stories for children employing all his grace, artistry and wit, of which the best-known is The Happy Prince. Counterpoints to this were his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, which shocked and outraged many readers of his day, and his stories for adults which exhibited his fascination with the relations between serene art and decadent life.

Wilde took London by storm with his plays, particularly his masterpiece The Importance of Being Earnest. His essays - in particular De Profundis- and his Ballad of Reading Gaol, both written after his release from prison, strikingly break the bounds of his usual expressive range. His other essays and poems are all included in this comprehensive collection of the works of one of the most exciting writers of the late nineteenth century.

Product Description

Review

"The appearance of this first volume in the new Oxford series of Wilde's complete works is a significant event for all students of the writer. For the first time, all Wilde's known surviving poems are collected together, including twenty-one which were not published during his lifetime" -- Review of Engish Studies

"The editorial apparatus is meticulous and exhaustive ... As ancillary evidence for Wilde's later importance as a major cultural phenomenon, they [the poems] will reward more serious attention from scholars than they have previously received, and to that end this edition will deservedly become a standard work" -- Review of Engish Studies --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From the Back Cover

Continuously in print since 1948, the Collins 'Complete Works of Oscar Wilde' has long been established as the most comprehensive and authoritative single-volume collection of Wilde's work available, containing his only novel, ' The Pictures of Dorian Gray', as well as his plays, stories, poems, essays and letters, all in their most authoritative texts. This new and expanded edition now includes

• all the plays and stories
• additional essays and poems
• newly commissioned introductions to each section by Merlin Holland, Owen Dudley Edwards, Declan Kiberd and Terence Brown
• a chronological table of Oscar Wilde's life and work

This book retains the 1966 general introduction by Oscar Wilde's son, Vyvyan Holland, with a new introduction by his grandson, Merlin Holland. Also included is a comprehensive biography of works by and about Oscar Wilde.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THE PAPERBACK VERSION!!! 16 July 2008
By BDHolic
Format:Paperback
This rating is only for the paperback version not the text itself. The quality of this version is so horrible that I can not even read it and have to buy the hardcover version. Don't make the same misstake I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars The essential guide to sagacity 18 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
It's not really necessary to say that Wilde is one of the best authors ever. His works are obligatory to any serious reader's bookshelf. If you are not a native English speaker, it's also a good fountain of vocabulary and "Brit" wit. Well done Oscar, wherever you are!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, great fly-swat! 20 Oct 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Whoa! I was totally unfamiliar with the works of Oscar Wilde, until I bought this one on a friend's recommendation. It's huuuuuge, yet incredibly beautiful. Dorian Gray must be one of the greatest stories ever told, his poems are razor-sharp, his letters not less, and every line he comes up with is quotable. If you want to make sure you don't miss a thing, this is the book to get (and try his biography, especially the part about the trial).

5.0 out of 5 stars Profoundly moving 19 July 2012
Format:Hardcover
I read De Profundis. If you haven't already, you should too. It's stunning - an incredibly moving, profound and beautifully written piece of prose. Wilde, languishing alone in Reading Gaol, approaching the end of his two-year sentence for gross indecency, is writing to Lord Alfred Douglas, the vain, empty-headed, upper-crust young man whose outrageous, selfish behaviour brought him to ruin. In his letter, Wilde talks of the misery and shame he has endured since his conviction and imprisonment. He talks of his mistakes and regrets, of the 'revolting scandal' that led to his downfall, of the effect that his disgrace has had on his family. And he talks too, brilliantly and with heartbreaking clarity, of the love and humility and wisdom that he has found in his suffering. "Where there is Sorrow there is holy ground," Wilde tells his former lover, whose arrogance and stupidity he has long since forgiven. "Some day you will realise what that means. You will know nothing of life till you do."

I bought this used and it was in good condition and at a very good price. I didn't read the plays, but apart from those I found the compilation extremely worthwhile reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical, Fantastic, and Wilde! 30 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This novel is a turbulant explanation of the ruined life of a man who has escaped any physical ramifications of sin. Dorian Gray's body and face go untouched by the nightmarish double-life he leads, while his portrait is changed by every wrong. The main question I had after reading it was whether someone would feel emotionally the effects of sin if he didn't feel them physically. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is young or remembers being so, for this work explores the wonders and miseries of youth.
