More About the Author

Jules Verne was born in Nantes in 1828, the eldest of five children
of a prosperous family claiming French, Breton, and Scottish
ancestry. His early years were happy apart from an unfulfilled
passion for his cousin Caroline. Literature always attracted him
and while taking a law degree in Paris he wrote a number of plays.
His first book, about a journey to Scotland, was not published
during his lifetime. However, in 1862, Five Weeks in a Balloon was
accepted by the publisher Hetzel, becoming an immediate success.
It was followed by Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Twenty
Thousand Leagues under the Seas, Around the World in Eighty Days,
and sixty other novels, covering the whole world (and below
and beyond). Verne himself travelled over three continents, before
suddenly selling his yacht in 1886. Eight of the books appeared after
his death in 1905--although they were in fact written partly by his
son, Michel.

This is an excellent but not comprehensive collection of his works. Its well worth downloading to your kindle so you can read any of the 27 Verne novels included (He wrote 54 novels plus other short stories; but his most famous are here). The translations from French to English are mixed between newer translations and old - this is important because unfortunately some of the older (Victorian) translations of Verne's works were not faithful to the original texts, with certain translators removing elements that were perceived as critical of the British Empire (though Verne was certainly not Anti-British, and some of his most popular works feature British heros). The books appear to be, for the most part, a mix of newer translations and the better older translations.

My only (very minor) gripe with this ebook is when you use your Kindle's "Go to..." and try to select the "Table of Contents", the button is greyed out. This is the publisher's fault as they've created the table of contents in the wrong way. It DOES exist however; you just need to go to the "Cover" and then turn a couple of pages; it has a comprehensive set of links to each book and then each chapter as needed.

So 4.5/5 for the books and translations, and lost half a star for one minor annoyance. This is a well presented and organised collection, and for the tiny amount asked, well worth it; certainly much easier than collecting the works individually for free (and legally) from the internet. Highly recommended.

Iam a fan of this author and already have a shelf-ful of his works but this nicely complemented this collection.

Jules Verne wrote some amazing science fiction and though his style is, at times, over detailed the stories are excellent. My only complaint about this book is that some words appear to be corrupted and you have to guess (easy in most cases) what they should be. I am not sure whether this is an error with the download or in the base ebook.

That's astonishing value for money for a lot a Kindle fodder. If, like me, you had not previously read any Verne but wanted to know what the fuss was all about (if not, why are you reading this?), then press the 'buy' button now! At that price, what can possible go wrong?

And it doesn't even weigh anything.

The Project Gutenberg versions are better (And free as they should be). You can download them as DRM free mobi files and either e-mail them to your @free.kindle.com account or just copy them over.

27 books for very little outlay = really good value. Only just begun reading them but this should keep me going for much of the summer.

Rather than review the books I'll just say a couple of words about the format. When it comes to Kindle downloads in my experience much cheapness usually means little or no effort has been made with the presentation. This however has a nice cover and decent enough table of contents which allows for easy navigation. For the pittance I paid I'd say this represents excellent value.

If only the promised table of contents worked!

I am having to read each book in order.

Some are good '20,000 leagues under the sea' 'around the world in 80 days', 'once around the moon'.

Some are dull, lost interest about half way down the Amazon, cant even remember the title of that one.
