I was always aware of Bread during my youth but never quite enough to buy any of their albums alongside all the heavier rock material that was grabbing my attention in the early seventies. But, unlike so many other bands of that era, Bread never quite faded into misty half-memories. Semi-consciously, I guess, the idea always stayed in my mind that one day I might get round to buying a retrospective collection spanning their entire career.

And here it is, a 3 CD set that seems to do exactly that, and all for just a few quid. The songs are nice, the progression from year to year smooth and easy to follow, whilst I've had no technical problems with my copy. In fact, the remastering seems to be very good (and I do set great store by such things), albeit Bread's songs aren't exactly dynamically demanding.

The only thing missing is anything whatsoever in the way of sleeve notes beyond a track list, timings and the songwriting credit for each disc. Which is a shameful bit of skimping, even for a low cost retrospective such as this, as I for one would like to know much more about the history of the band, where the songs were written and recorded and what has become now of the various members.

But, apart from that gripe, for the money, or even three times as much, this is a quality compilation with which you simply can't go wrong. Just buy it and enjoy this important slice of musical history from the golden era.

I actually have owned this set for a couple of months now and only managed to listen to disc 1 which seemed ok. I put on disc 3 last night (first track: "Guitar Man") and I'd thought I'd blown my tweeters by having the volume set too high. Luckily By trying other discs in my collection this wasn't the case, its simply down to very poor mastering on Rhino's part. As with other reviewers here, AVOID AT ALL COSTS and buy "The Sound of Bread" instead.
