5.0 out of 5 stars ALMOST AN ENTIRE CATALOGUE FOR A TENNER? SWEET!, 24 Nov 2007
By A. Fleming - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

To sum up this collection in as few words as possible... it is perfect.

Okay, so it doesn't contain EVERY song they have ever recorded, but it does contain all significant tracks from their catalogue from the beginning up to the early 90's (while signed to London Records).

Also, although it is a budget compilation it doesn't have a really cheap looking cover. The picture and graphics are classy - unusual that it has a picture including Jacqui O'Sullivan on the front cover and not the normal three with Siobhan Fahey.

Over the three cds there are several tracks from each of their London albums, "Deep Sea Skiving", "Bananarama", "True Confessions", "Wow", "The Greatest Hits Collection", "Pop Life" and "Please Yourself".

My personal favourite tracks are from the "Pop Life" period, when Bananarama were experimenting with a more adult sound, using drum loops and samples. However, there is something for everyone here... the early 80's and the mid to late 80's Stock Aitken and Waterman tracks.

In an ideal world we would have a comprehensive (and official) collection containing tracks from their post London Records career. However, this doesn't exist so make do with this collection in the meantime. You won't be disappointed.

:)

3.0 out of 5 stars Extensive career overview of a decent but unremarkable pop band, 29 May 2009
Unremarkable music that's too production line sounding. The up-side is a lack of bad music, but the down-side is a lack of any truly inspired songs that stands out. The songs follow a formula too rigidly. It's almost as if they wrote them to a grid that plots out where all the different bits go. Things do loosen up by about the middle of disc two.

The songs all sound very similar to each from a songwriting point of view, but they don't sound too samey. Lyrically they seem to just repeat three or four lines in various combinations. The three singers all sound the same so I personally can't tell them apart.

This a cheap quickly knocked together budget compilation. There is no indication that any time or effort has been made to make this a good release. The packaging is sparse with only one picture and no liner notes. Tracks 6 and 7 on disc one appear to be mislabelled with each other. There are two versions of "Cruel Summer" on the discs but there is no information on the packaging to explain why. Turns out that the second version is a re-recording from 1989 with new singer Jacquie O'Sullivan.

I'm not familiar with their career so I can't comment on how well selected and sequenced the tracklist is.

There is also no mention of the music being remastered. I assume they have just taken the pre-existing master tapes and have compressed them to make the music as loud as other modern CDs. This process has probably done no harm to the sound quality as the original music wasn't full of ambient passages and extreme dynamic changes between the loud and quiet bits.

Disc 1 (55 mins) 3 stars

1. "Really Saying Something" (with Fun Boy Three) (4 stars out of 5)
Solid song with simple lyrics. Lots of odd percussion sounds. Although the production is a little murky it has more vim to it than most of the music on the first disc.

2. "Shy Boy" (3 stars)
Decent but very unremarkable. Nothing distinctive.

3. "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" (2 stars)
Messy sounding song with lots of vocals on top of each other. Unremarkable.

4. "Cruel Summer" (3 stars)
Solid song and very 80's sounding.

5. "Robert De Niro's Waiting..." (3 stars)
Oddly indifferent for a hit single. The only rememberable thing about it is the De Niro name dropping. Good keyboard part at the end,

6. "Cheers Then" (2 stars)
Big nothing of a song with difficult to make out vocals.

7. "Rough Justice" (3 stars)
Has a saxophone on it. 'Don't call that justice' is a strong vocal hook.

8. "Hot Line to Heaven" (7" version) (2 stars)
Not much of a song, very slight. Sounds more like a production than a song. Some of the vocal inflections remind me slightly of a Steely Dan song that I can't quite place.

9. "Wish You Were Here" (3 stars)
Solid song but as usual there's nothing distinctive about it.

10. "Through a Child's Eyes" (3 stars)
A slower ballad with a big 80's drum sound. Lyrically too insubstantial to get excited about.

11. "Aie a Mwana" (3 stars)
Rocks out a bit and is made up of silly nonsense words (it might be a foreign language but I doubt it). Sounds different but still nothing great. Seems to have a trumpet and a saxophone on it.

12. "He's Got Tact" (3 stars)
Good bouncy and enjoyable pop song with a distinctive vocal performance. One of the better songs.

13. "Young at Heart" (3 stars)
A bit gaudy and bright sounding.

14. "King of the Jungle" (2 stars)
Vocals are hard to make out. Musical wallpaper.

15. "State I'm In" (3 stars)
Just like all of the others - unremarkable but solid enough pop with banal repetitive lyrics and percussion heavy 80's production.

16. "The Wild Life" (3 stars)
More of the same.
