White Denim's debut album `Workout Holiday' has been received rapturously by the critics and it is easy to see why. The record is an exhilarating mix-up of styles; raw garagey-bluesy indie rock augmented with unusual sound effects and off-kilter changes of pace and direction. There is lots of fun to be had trying to pin down the band's musical influences; White Stripes, Pavement and even Butthole Surfers came to mind for me.

But is it any good? The answer is yes indeed. The opening track `Let's Talk About It' is superb, driven by an instantly catchy raw guitar riff. `Shakespeare Shake' has a tremendous grinding bass-line around which guitars riff and jangle in an almost 60s sound. `Sitting' starts with a skewed bluesy-piano intro then heads off into catchy indie-rock territory with great echoey backing vocals. `I Can Tell' is a great, raw bluesy stomp with a psychedelic mid-section and does it all in less than two minutes.

If you love music with a bit of daring and experimentation this is the record for you. `Mess Your Hair Up' is a case in point; it starts straightforwardly enough as tracks before it but after a couple of minutes weird, almost electronic effects come in before the song changes direction completely, ending with a burst of guitar distortion worthy of fellow Texans Butthole Surfers.

`Workout Holiday' has a lo-fi, DIY aesthetic to it but I believe it to be a very carefully crafted record; all the mish-mash of styles work so well and the quality is strong throughout. Time will tell whether it is a true classic but if your interest has been piqued by its rave reviews then dive in, you won't be disappointed.

The sound of acoustic guitars and the angelic voices of Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver seemed to dominate the critics lists of the best albums of 2008, but as an anecdote to all that try White Denim's debut, as it might strike a perfectly disjointed chord.

"Workout Holiday" is an erratic and playful album, with "workout" being quite an apt term - as each song eventually descends into some kind of choppy musical wig-out of clattering drums, elastic rumbling bass lines and guitar thrashing - with James Petralli's wailing and whooping lyrics barked over the top. It's music that never wants to sit still for very long and will deviate from normality whenever it can.

Personally, I find it a lot of fun because for all the experimentation there is unquestionably a lot of "pop" here, with some cracking melodies too - "Shake Shake Shake" is a great indie tune, but the band can't resist gleefully plundering into long jangling solos that don't seem to be heading anywhere (and I mean that as a compliment).

If it's all rather jarring on the first listen, then relax - it takes a couple of spins before it comes into focus. But this is the sound of a cool, and above all, very talented band who I hope continue to swim against the tide.

...but White Denim are worth the effort.

If you like the MC5, Can, Television, Devo, Love, Captain Beefheart, or anyone even slightly inluenced by any of the above, you owe it to yourself to buy this album. Even if you don't, you should probably still buy it anyway, because it's truly an extraordinary record, and you can never have too many of them in your collection, right?

Buy it. Buy it right now. Quick, before it's too late...

After seeing them perform in Lewes (and falling slightly in love with the lead singer I won't lie....), I had to buy a CD! I chose this one as I had "Shake Shake Shake" as a single on my iPod and loved it.
The rest of the album doesn't disappoint - it's fun, upbeat, interesting & has some catchy riffs. The vocals actually remind me a little of the black keys, esp some of their earlier stuff, but of course the two bands are completely different and most people would probably think me completely off my head for that...! Anyhow I look forward to buying more of their albums, this one is great. Honest.

My purchase of cd's has slowed down in recent months but I took a punt on this one and man am I glad I did!!

Every single track has driving beat to them which you just can't help tapping your foot to. There's not one song I have to skip which is a rarity..
My only gripe is that the overall packaging of the cd is pretty streamlined, but I guess if I was in a new band starting out I wouldn't have much cash for anything too fancy...

All that said and done, this is the best cd I've bought since QOTSA's Era Vulgaris. This one's gonna be in the car for a while....
