Product Description

Review

"'I was delighted to read this book. It is simply the most thoughtful, comprehensible, and accessible work I have yet seen on working with the whole system. Its authors speak from their hard-won wisdom; as you read their comments, you know you are in the presence of people who have been doing the work for a long time and spent long hours reflecting on its meaning and lessons.' Margaret J Wheatley, in the Foreword" --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Synopsis

"Whole System Working" is an approach that enables people to find sustainable solutions to local problems. It is also a theoretical approach to organizational development that views groups of people who share a common purpose as a "living system". Based on King's Fund work over four years with health agencies and their local partners in housing, local government, the independent sector, transport, and local people, this book describes the founding principles which characterize the approach, gives examples of its application in practice, and answers common questions.

As an Integrative psychotherapist with an interest in multiculturalism, I have found this book interesting, stimulating and personably written. In using the metaphor of living systems, it is an organic, positive and straight-forward approach to understanding human systems based on "what works" rather than fixing what does not. It addresses how we can move together towards changing the systems in which we live, by identifying mutually fulfilling goals through a shared experience of being human. In this way, it is a respectful approach to valuing every member of a system and their experience of that system. If your interest lies in creating an organic, psychologically healthy and functioning society, I cannot recommend this book enough!

This book, and the Whole Systems Working Paper series, have helped me enormously in making sense of inter-agency working and policy implementation in a multi-agency setting. The authors are brilliant at weaving together the theories/concepts with the practiclities, and convey a real sense of "learning as we go".

If like me you work in the real world and are interested not only in understanding what whole system working is, but how to apply it, read this. I liked the short explanation on what whole systems working is, how the use of metaphors can open up thinking to new possibilities, and the live examples cited throughout. I thought that the placing of the Glossary of Terms at the begining of the book, and the section on Commonly Asked Questions was helpful. The authors of this book are published academics, who clearly want the ideas of whole system working, to reach across all boundaries and have gone out of their way to dump unnecessary jargon and pretense to achieve this. The Forward by the way, is written by Margaret Wheatley.
