The Dream has come true - Bring on the Alps!, 21 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Working in Ski Resorts: Europe and North America (Working in Ski Resorts: Europe & North America) (Paperback)
Working in Ski Resorts gave me all the information I needed to secure a position for this season. It provides an informal but thorough guide to working, partying, skiing and general surviving in a ski resort. It gives an overview of the ski resort and what one can generally expect. This is further broken down by country with the job opportunities and nuances which exist in certain locations e.g. visa requirements. It then details every single ski operator, and some more, offering employment for a winter seaon. Details such as type and number of positions, salaries and skillsets required, exist for every operator. Other handy facts such as couples preferred, friends can work together are commonplace in the ski operator section. Contact details and method i.e. CV and covering letter, or phone for application form are always included. Thereafter there is a thorough description of the majority of ski resorts in a typical brochure. An informative and honest guide to particularly the social life, skiing quality and reliability is without doubt well researched and high on the list of prerequisites to any potential 'saisoners'. Working in Ski Resorts does not stop there. It describes many of the ups, downs, scams and pitfalls which one could encounter, but may not have expected pre season. Summarising, it paints a very realistic picture, from the blue skies and snow capped peaks to the dirty dishes and smelly toilets. Regardless of which end of the spectrum you may be at during the season; even the worst compares favourably with a Winter of discontent packed like sweaty sardines staring at the roof of a London tube. I had already made my decision to work for a season, but thanks to this enjoyable as well as informative read, I can rest assured that my decision is based on facts, reality, and dreams, not just the latter.

Changed my life, no really!, 22 Oct 2001

This review is from: Working in Ski Resorts: Europe and North America (Working in Ski Resorts: Europe & North America) (Paperback)
I came across an older edition of this book in my local carers library several years ago. Until then I had always assumed that to work in the Alps you needed fluent langages and good skiing ability. This book described plenty of jobs which didn't require either. The end result was 3 years spent working in the Alps (and now I do have the languages and the skiing ability!).
Not only is it very useful, but it is also funny and easy to read. If you are thinking about working in the Alps, or just spending a season there skiing on the cheap this book wil prove priceless. The book gives arun down of just about al the seasonal jobs, the best resorts to look for work in and good advice on the 'red tape' you may come across.
