"Let the river run, Let all the dreamers wake the nation..",

With these lyrics ringing in your ears, the Staten Island ferry carries Tess (Melanie Griffith) past the Statue of Liberty to her job as a secretary, working in the shadow of the World Trade Center. An unfortunate skiing accident in the Alps befalls her backstabbing boss (played with suitable glee by Sigourney Weaver) giving Tess the opportunity to pose as the high-power broker she yearns to be. But how long can Tess keep up the pretence, especially once she falls in love with Jack (Harrison Ford), the man with whom she is putting together a multi-million dollar deal?Truly a Pretty Woman for the 80's, this film has big hair, big earrings and big ambition. Special mention must go to Joan Cusack, wonderful as the best friend torn between supporting Tess' dreams and reminding her to keep her feet on the ground: Harrison Ford plays to type as the decent guy, who undresses the very drunk Tess to avoid damaging her $6000 gown when she gets into bed, reassuring her: "I kept my eyes closed the whole time" This film has uplifting music, a Cinderella-esque storyline and some great views of New York. Get your girlfriends round, grab some chocs and sing along with Carly Simon. Go on, I dare you to be in a crowd of commuters and not imagine for one minute that you are Tess...

Nearly twenty years on, this film has survived the test of time and exudes maximum effort from Harrison Ford, Melanie Griffith and Sigourney Weaver.They were all at their peak at the time and it shoes. Melanie steals the show as the secretary who has to brave both the frying pan of a male dominated corporate world and the fire namely her idea stealing boss, Sigourney.
Though she isn't as qualified as her ivy league peers, she is just as astute, if not smarter. By playing her own little game, she starts to get noticed to the detriment of her crocked boss. It works but only just..and the Working Girl becomes the Working Boss. I remember a scene where Harrison is on the phone whilst simultaneously trying to remove his shirt...Classic !!! Also the classic tune, Let the River Run.

The Greatest Office Film Ever,

So much to delight the viewer in this film: Alec Baldwin's hairy chested pigman character, Kevin Spacey snorting coke in the limo as 'Bob from Arbitrage', Oliver Platt's office creep, Joan Cusack's big hair - and that's all in the first 5 minutes!!
Who couldn't fall in love with Melanie Griffith's character? Then Harrison Ford actually doing some acting! And Sigourney Weaver as the bitch. It's too good! Intelligent direction - a postmodern ending. What's going on? Entertainment with a brain and a heart. Mamma Mia? Pah!
