I highly recommend this book to anyone who is at an intermediate/advanced level whether or not they are considoring turning pro & regardless of what style they wish to play, although there is an entire chapter dedicated to surviving as a jazz bassist.
Most of this book serves best as an intro to different aspects of bass playing (chording, doubling etc) and if there is a specific aspect which you wish to learn it may be better to get a book which concentrates on those aspects.
Probably the most valuable section of the book is the "core skills" section which incorporates chapters on navigating chord charts, ear training & improving your ability to play in time.
The second section is about how to get & keep gigs on the "general business" circuit which whilst useful for those who want to start playing weddings etc is not much use for those who don't. The third and final section is on specialised skills such as doubling (playing acoustic as well as electric), fundamentals of 5 string bass, getting an upright sound on an electric bass & bass chording.
Most of the book is written in just music (i.e. not in tab) so for those who don't read music it will pose problems. The other problem is that not all of the exercises are recorded on the cd.
Most of the book is material compiled from Bass Player magasine so those who have subscribed for years may already have the material but some of it dates from the early 90's.
