More About the Author

Peter Higginbotham gave up on history at the age of 13 - "it was all about wars and kings and queens not ordinary people." Years later, tracing his family history, he became fascinated by the workhouse - a place where one of his forebears had died. His wide-ranging researches resulted in an acclaimed web site (workhouses.org.uk) and several books including the much-praised Workhouse Cookbook. Its sequel, the Prison Cookbook, charts the often gruesome history of the prison system, and how the food served to the inmates reflected the changing regimes for those behind bars. Peter, who now lives in West Yorkshire, regularly contributes to magazines, radio and TV programmes, and frequently presents talks on the workhouse and related topics to groups around the region.

Product Description

From the Author

As well as containing over 120 striking images of workhouse buildings, many of which still exist, the book provides a history of the poor laws from Tudor times up to the 1930s, particularly focusing on its development in the north of England. Also included is a comprehensive gazetteer of all the union workhouses built in the north of England, including National Grid references to help pinpoint their locations.

About the Author

Peter Higginbotham has a website (www.workhouses.org.uk) dedicated to the history of British workhouses. He has written a number of articles and presented talks on the subject as well as contributing to a number of radio and television programmes.

It is heartbreaking in places but, anyone who has had a relative in the workhouse should put it on their must read list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well documented 21 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Very interesting to see that some of the building survive today, albeit for other uses. Although I had hoped that more of the workhouses around the eden valley would have been mentioned.
