As my previous review has not yet appeared, I thought I would write another!

This really is one of the best books on the workhouse system in print today: with hundreds of Victorian photographs and recipes to illustrate a beautifully written, witty tour through the workhouse diet, it would make a fantastic Christmas present. Check out Peter's website (www.workhouses.org.uk) and get a copy today. You'll even be able to cook Christmas pudding for 300 with one of the recipes.....

I wasn't sure about this book at first, but as I delved into it I became fascinated by the picture the author draws on life in the workhouse. Some of the human stories are really quite eye openers - and not all horror stories at all. Some are quite light hearted and I think that's one of the things I liked about this book - he is really trying to set out a view of the workhouse that is balanced and informative, and it isnt all doom and gloom at all. Its also much more than a cookbook though food appears throughout the book, as well as the full set of recipes at the end. We did try a few - amazingly, quite surprisingly good, and also cheap and nutritious. I would say if you are looking for a rather different present this Christmas, this could well be one to consider. Enjoy!

An extremely well written book which includes a host of facts which will be fascinating to anyone with an interest in the way in which their none-too-distant relatives may have lived!!
The inclusion of pictures and photos from across the UK add to the interest and it is a book which can be put down and picked up again without losing any momentum.
