Workers' Playtime was a popular BBC programme which started in 1940 to help boost morale and aimed at entertaining, and recognising, those engaged in war work in factories and other work places. This is original broadcast material from the warmly remembered radio variety show, dating from 1941 to 1946.

There is a complete half-hour show from February 1943 in the presence of HRH Queen Mary, the then Queen Mother, and the standard of acts was high, notably the engaging humour of Claude Dampier and Billie Carlyle, and Elsie and Doris Waters. Some humour from that time hasn't worn well, but these examples can still raise a smile.

Amongst the other items on the CD is a splendid performance by Norman Long, whose little stories made me chuckle, and I loved the ten minutes spent in the company of Renee Houston and Donald Stewart. Another old favourite, from the same show as Houston and Stewart, was Jack Warner...long before he kept the nation's streets safe as Dixon of Dock Green. Less entertaining, but interesting from a historical point of view is the worthy "address to workers" by Ernest Bevin.

The CD is well presented and the standard of remastering of these rare recordings is quite exceptional. This release will find much favour with anyone interested in wartime entertainment and the radio programmes of the time.

I was born in 1958, so cant remember workers playtime during its long run, however i can remember when (in our house anyway) radio was king, mum listening to the archers (walter gabriel) and bath night on sunday "sing something simple" with the mike sam singers. i know this has nothing to do with this cd but it does bring back happy memories when comedy was clean and clever, so sit back and enjoy 72 mins of what england (britain) used to be. The Ernest Bevin speech alone is worth the price, and the 1943 episode pure magic.
