From the Author

You can bring your heart into your work - and earn money!
This book was born out my personal experience of being in a well paid job in computer sales and marketing, but being unhappy because it wasn't really me. I was playing a role, not being authentic and not being creative, but was scared stiff to leave because I had so much invested in the car, the house, my identity, and also had precious little idea about how I could earn a living doing something that my heart was in. I knew it was no longer for me, and although I was terrified, I found the courage to quit and follow my heart to create a new career that my heart was in.

Over the last 10 years I have created this new career - inspiring individuals and organisations to be more authentic in their work, and bring the best of themselves to it, in order to have true fulfilment in their work. I am the founder of the Heart at Work Project in London, and have been a director of Alternatives at St. James's in Piccadilly. My book details my own personal journey of the joys and challenges of major life change, has dozens of cases studies of people who have created the work they were born to do, and is also a practical handbook to give you the ideas, inspiration and tools to do it yourself, including the biggest one for most of us - money! The book also helps you change within your existing work. I don't claim quick fixes - for me this process can take some time, focus and effort, but the rewards of the joy of finding and expressing our spirit and the fulfilment are worth it. I do believe we are most likely to be truly successful - personally and financially - when our heart is in what are doing.

I have been thrilled by thre feedback I have received from people who have read it. It seems to have hit a wave - so many of us are wanting our work and our livelihood to be an expression of the best of us - our spirit - and I hope my book can help you on your journey.

All best wishes, Nick Williams

5.0 out of 5 stars The vlaue is in the questions asked not answers given, 7 Mar 2006

I seem to be flowing against the tide here in giving this book a good review, but hey, that's what opinion is for I guess.

I was a senior recruitment consultant for 9 years. I came across lots of books that told you how to write a good CV, how to do well at interview, how to be effective and so on. If that's the sort of book you are after STOP RIGHT THERE and don't buy this book. This book will not give you answers, it will not tell you what to do or even how to do it.

However, I found the book extremely useful - in fact, unlike the other reviewers, I did find it life changing when I read it a number of years ago. The thing is, this book can't be just 'read through' it is a book that has to be worked through. You have to get your pen and paper out and write down your reactions and thoughts to the questions posed. I did this and years later found the notes I had made - it really was amazing how it had helped shaped my new career - and remember, I was a very successful 'professional' in the area of careers !

If you do this, it really makes you think about what is important to you, the way that you have been conditioned to think about work and money and pay etc. It helps you to break through preconceptions that are perhaps holding you back and helps you to take more initiative and change the way you see work.

As I said it doesn't tell you what to do, you are a unique individual - how could any book tell you that? You will find that you already have the answers, but they are locked away behind misconceptions and unhelpful conditioning. This book helps you to liberate them - it can be life changing if you let it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring joy to both your life and work!, 13 Sep 2000
This review is from: The Work We Were Born to Do: Find the Work You Love, Love the Work You Do (Paperback)
Like Nick I'd reached a crisis in my career, and found a copy of this unique book by chance. Neither your typical career guide nor self-help manual, I was gripped from the very first paragraph as I couldn't believe someone was articulating so precisely what I was feeling.

The book has inspired me to radically re-think my own career goals and lifestyle. However, I'm sure that anyone would benefit from reading this as the message is so universal: listen to your heart to bring happiness to your life; don't fall into the trap of living by society's expectations and your own false, disspiriting beliefs.

I could say a lot more, but instead will just highly recommend it - some of the passages you will read again and again. Thank you.
