5.0 out of 5 stars Strange news from another world, 1 Oct 2009
By Birte Gam-jensen "Birte Jensen" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Work in Progress - And Other Stories (Caine Prize: Annual Prize for African Writing) (Paperback)
A marvellous collection of short stories from Africa bringing a totally different kind of life closer to our western ignorance.
There is a short story - Ravalushan - about living with frequent revolutions and expected violence and another about not being able to find your home and there is this boy who desparately wants to be adopted preferably by American parents so that he may escape from the refugee camp.
Several of the stories demonstrate the fragile balance between being self supporting and being a prostitute when obviously the money making way is the prostitution. And several of the stories are about fighting for dignity and respect and like many African fairy tales there are only few endings.
Hopefully, we will hear more of the writers in this book.
