Book Description

1 April 2009 1864703261 978-1864703269
Bob Gill's third book for images is about the relationship of words and pictures in how we communicate. Writers and poets have been creating works with both literary and visual interest since ancient times. What fascinates Bob Gill about this genre is that it has the potential to be the simplest and most original way of communicating. He asks, 'Why show the name of something and then have to make it look interesting by adding an image, when the two functions can be combined?'. This book shows how words and pictures, in the skilled hands and minds of a master graphic designer such as Bob Gill, can combine to make powerful statements. Designer/illustrator/copywriter/educator Bob Gill's impressive career spans several decades. His love of and affinity for graphic design is contagious and he generously shares his passion through education. His other books for images include "Graphic Design as a Second Language" (ISBN: 9781920744397) and "Illustration" (ISBN: 9781920744731).

5.0 out of 5 stars A TREAT FOR BOTH THE EYE AND THE INTELLECT 16 July 2009
By Gail Cooke TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Few have had as varied and successful career as Bob Gill. One can only imagine how he came from working in a 6 x 10 room in NYC furnished with only a bed, a chair, an upright piano, a drawing table and a multitude of orange crates to winning an ADC Gold Medal. Nonetheless he did. And along the way he led a band while still in his early teens, served in the Army, was advised to forget design and become a photographer, wrote children's books, was a filmmaker, and taught.

Surely I've left out a great dealt but perhaps most importantly to those interested in the communication arts he developed his own philosophy which was to try to create an original image for every assignment. Further, he thought that "the most likely way of doing that was to forget all `good design' preconceptions and let each new problem suggest a solution." How right he was as can be seen in his latest book "Words Into Pictures."

Opening with a pictorial alphabet from France dated 1596 he proceeds to the more contemporary with over 100 logos, ad details, album covers, and posters (don't miss the pharmaceutical ad details or the birth announcement).

Words Into Pictures is a treat for both the eye and the intellect. Enjoy!

- Gail Cooke
