5.0 out of 5 stars An idealistic, sweet story, Words with Wings is a quick read that brightened my entire day, and I'm sure it will brighten yours. 16 Jan 2014
By MidnightAria - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Words with Wings is a beautiful verse novella told through the eyes of a middle-grade girl. What surprised me was how, despite the intended audience, the book didn't dismiss important topics: instead, it wove around it, showcasing Gabriella's happiness as more important and greater than any sorrow.

Throughout the entire book, which was absolutely adorable, the right things were used to utilize characterisation --fragments where we veer off into one of Gabriella's daydreams-- and other acts of compassion, such as the considerate, open-minded teacher who encouraged daydreaming.

My only complaint is the "class bully" as a one-dimensional, unexplored character, but I have to remind myself that this is intended for middle-grade. If looking from that perspective, it is no longer a flaw.

An idealistic, sweet story, Words with Wings is a quick read that brightened my entire day, and I'm sure it will brighten yours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt Story 13 Jan 2014
By Vida Zuljevic - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Masterfully written, Words with Wings is an inspiring novel in verse that showcases Grime's superb skill of bringing marvelous figurative language, emotions, and thoughts about real life situations together to create a book that will touch readers' hearts right away and for sure be among the highest-rated books in the world of literature for children. A portrait of a teacher who made a difference in Gabby’s life is brilliantly weaved into this heartfelt story as a warm and assuring tribute to all teachers who do make a positive difference in their students’ lives on an everyday basis. Thank you, Ms. Grimes, for another gem among many others that come from your creative mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written 27 Dec 2013
By Jen R - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
A beautifully executed book where the words really do have wings and fly. This book works so well in verse, because the topic and main character lend themselves to such poetic words and thoughts. Great for kids working on poetry in school or who love poetry in general.

I received a copy of this book as a judge for the Cybils awards. Opinions are strictly my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful! 17 Dec 2013
By Catherine Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a novella in verse about a girl named after Angel Gabriel who lives in a dream world and struggles to deal with the divorce of her parents and a new school. I particularly like how her teacher transformed from being irritated by Gabby's lack of focus in class to embracing her creativity and letting it shine. Loved this book for many reasons.
