Lena is a white girl living in america in the 1910's. She wins a contest that everyone thought the white boy would win. When they arrive home they realise they have enemies (the Haney's who are white). They live on a plot of land that belongs to Mrs.Chism. One day Lena's father is asked to fix a fence for Mrs.Chism far away. He promises he will be back by a certain day and he is not. As he is not back by the next morning Lena decides to go and find him. After a while she arrives but can't see him. She then see's a smoke signal from a little way away. She goes to find him. When she gets there she discovers a nasty shock that is very upsetting. In the book and to the reader. It is a very heart warming story. A very good book.
