This really is one of the best web development books I have ever read. The tutorials are very clear and easy to follow and all the examples work well. The author builds on a case study throughout the book to demonstrate the concepts he is explaining.

If you have a basic knowledge of WordPress, this book will help you to improve your blog and add lots of advanced features. It's not just for business bloggers because much of the advice would apply to any type of WordPress blog.

The chapters on promoting your blog and building up your position in the blogosphere are particularly useful. It's not just technical information - many web marketing techniques are also discussed, like search engine optimisation and RSS.

The author recommends some very useful plugins and third-party services. If you already have a standard WordPress blog, the book will show you where to go next to turn it into a professional looking blog that will attract more readers. There is even advice on how to write good posts and create engaging content.

You won't find this information in the standard WordPress documentation. It gives you the kind of expertise a professional WordPress consultant would bring to your blog and shows you how easy it is to do it yourself. Thanks to the excellent tutorials, you won't have any trouble applying these advanced techniques. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants to take their WordPress blog to the next level.

Far from being just for business bloggers, I think this book would be an excellent resource for anyone wanting to know a bit more about blogging. All the information and guidelines would be applicable to any new blog.

You could even use this book as a self study course, work through each chapter and follow the case study and by the end, you will not only know how to make a full site but, you will know why you put headings here, how you should respond to comments, what to do with SEO and how to apply it and much more.

The case study site is quite simple and will give you a good `heads up' on how to add and remove items from an existing theme so you could adapt a regular theme to word specifically for your business.
The code is available to download from the packtpub website.

If you're working for your company and they don't have a blog, just the information in Chapter 1 and 2 about mapping out a strategic plan and how to implement solutions would arm you with enough `know-how' to talk your boss into getting your company into blogging. And wouldn't it be nice if you knew just how to start? :-)

Whilst the main part of the book is concerned with blogging using wordpress, as one reviewer has already pointed out, the points about blogging made in the book apply to any blogging software.

But more than that, several chapters cover issues that are relevant for all kinds of websites, not just blogs. The questions raised in the first two chapters should be asked by anyone thinking about establishing an internet presence.

It is also a useful introduction to HTML and CSS. I highly recommend this book, on all sorts of levels.

I'm a new business owner who had absolutely no "back room" web or programming skills whatsoever. We'd been struggling to manage with a a slow and clunky basic iWeb site but I wanted to upgrade to something more professional, more search engine friendly, and more compatible with other social media etc without having any funds to pay a web developer to do this. Wordpress seemed to be the answer but the only trouble was I had no idea where to start. So I bought the book hoping it would solve all my problems. And it pretty much did!

I know other reviewers say this is a great book for general bloggers too, but I found as a business owner wanting to create a CMS out of wordpress this addressed those specific and unique issues from scratch. Many of these sort of books say they are for beginners but then you open them and feel pretty bamboozled. This one really is different.

It takes you through the basics, and it meant I could achieve all I'd hoped with my site. But then it went beyond that and enabled me to do things I never thought possible, or didn't know you could do in Wordpress. 6 months after buying it I'm dipping in again to try and learn some HTML and CSS basics as it even has a chapter on this for complete beginners. I think I will continue to use it for years as I build on my confidence to dabble with the site and create others.

Sure, there are some examples that are a bit out of date, and some of the plugins are different since it was written, but that really doesn't detract from the skills it gives you, and overall knowledge that you build up. Let's face it, the pace of technology and speed of updates mean you're never going to get a published book that remains completely bang up to date.

I got this book as I am starting my own blog site and I wanted to learn about theme design and SEO.

Overall, what I like about this book is its step-by-step approach. It does not seek to confuse you and you come out of each chapter feeling more confident about the next step.

The best parts of the book is that it tells you where to find the relevant plugins for SEO and content building. This saves you a lot of time having to do the research yourself and learn from trial and error. The chapter on SEO is a bit skimpy and I wish there was more on this, but it does help you find the right tools for this.

My biggest disagreement with the author of this book is its approach to theme design. Paul Thewlis recommends a rather basic and minimalistic approach to theme design (his preference is for the sandbox theme). The finished result is very disappointing (you can see his blog by Googling "chilliguru"). This is not my idea of a professional and expert-looking blog. It looks bland and very basic - hardly professional.

A better approach to theme design (and save yourself hours of coding with CSS and HTML) would be to get some sort of theme-design plugin tool (one is offered by Frugal Theme). This tool allows you to build a professional looking blog plus all the SEO.
